TEPCO Admits Water Pump at Unit 5 Failed This Week

 [snip] . . .Tokyo Electric Power Co. learned Saturday that a faulty electric circuit caused a makeshift seawater pump cooling unit 5 to stop working. While the reactor was not operating during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the subsequent station blackout has made removal of decay heat from spent fuel and fuel inside the reactor core difficult. Following the recent pump failure, water temperatures in the unit climbed from 60.8 C Saturday to 94.8 C – just below boiling – Sunday, the Asahi Shimbun quoted TEPCO officials as saying. . . .
