Study/practice points:

  • See if you can identify the airport rotating beacon as you’re flying. What colors should you see?
  • What colors are the aircraft’s navigation lights? When do these need to be turned on? What about other lights such as the taxi, landing, and strobe lights? (See AIM 4-3-23. Use of Aircraft Lights)
  • Explore the functionality of Pilot Controlled Lighting. You may need to use a plugin such as this one for X-Plane.
  • What problems may occur during approach/landing due to optical illusions?

    How It Works

For your flight instructor to provide effective remote coaching, two key things need to be shared:

    • Voice communications
    • Your primary simulator screen

Generally, Zoom (free) is used to facilitate sharing both of these with your instructor.

You simply join a Zoom meeting via a link, then press the "Share Screen" button.

Zoom also allows you to optionally record your sessions, which is an excellent way to review and retain the info you learn.

If you use virtual reality (VR) or have a complex sim setup, we have various other methods to ensure your instructor can see everything they need to.

We also provide plugins that allow your instructor to remotely adjust sim parameters like failures and weather.
