It’s early May

As forecast it’s noticeably cooler today with the temperature in the low teens C and a chilly north-easterly wind gusting up to 30 mph.

Yesterday I dug up the two no-show first early potatoes Foremost I mentioned recently and I wasn’t surprised to find that both were badly slugged. I discarded them and planted two I was given (variety unknown), all the rest  of the potatoes have now appeared.

I’m growing a cucumber Diva this year which I’ve started off in a pot on the windowsill.  I won’t be taking it to the plot to plant out in a prepared area until early June.  Confusingly some seed suppliers state this is an indoor variety, and others that it’s a good outdoor ridge one.

Last year I grow some dwarf runner beans Jackpot which did well so I shall grow them again this year.  However I have been given some climbing ones Moonlight so I’ll be putting up a wigwam of six bamboo canes so I can grow these as well.

The plot highlight at present is the carpet of poached egg plant flowers, both the yellow/white ones and the white Meringue.

Have a good week, and take care!

  1. Oh my, look at those poached egg blooms, a carpet of white. Good luck with the new potatoes. And, I love green beans!

  2. The carpet of poached eggs looks so bright and full. Good to hear your growing plans are well on.

Dual instructions for cucumber growing: must be for different parts of the country, or to satisfy worldly requirements!

We have dug out winter coats and hats for the last three days. It has been bitingly cold. It is hard to adjust to.
    Take care. Xxx

    1. Menhir it sure is. Thanks.

I occcasionally find contradictory, or even wrong, advice on seed suppliers websites.

I’m not surprised, it feels cold here today with a cold north-easterly wind.

      Thanks, you too. xx

  3. Oh, how I love those poached egg annuals. Glad you’ve got a nice carpet of them!

Slugs are the worst. Besides ruining crops, they are just disgusting. Shame there aren’t some chickens or ducks to enjoy them!

    1. Nikki good for you, me too.

I agree. The slugs that eat planted potatoes are small black ones that live in the ground so they’re rarely seen. xx

  4. Poached egg plants look lovely. This morning l found a beautiful display of cornflowers had suddenly appeared, beautiful but surely too early? I have also noticed discrepancies about indoor/ outdoor cucumbers, l think you are safe with most outside in South of England if you start off indoors. Sounds like brilliant success rate with your potatoes. Another few chilly days ahead l’m afraid, despite that happy plotting.

    1. Andy I’m glad you like them. You’re lucky with the cornflowers, ones I sowed last year simply didn’t appear. I’m not surprised, and agree with you. Yes, so far so good. It certainly looks like it, and thanks. xx
