Weekend plotting

The unsettled weather through most of last week meant that I didn’t get to do much plotting but I’ve made up for it this weekend, which has been dry, as I forked over the three areas where I’ll be growing carrots, first early potatoes and tomatoes next year.  That just leaves the areas where I’ll be growing the onions and second early/main crop potatoes.  The recent rain has made the ground surpringly workable as I could push the fork in full depth without too much effort.

The nasturtiums at one end of the double row of strawberries are still flowering despite the leaves starting to die back.  I generally grow them here as I’ve never had much luck when I’ve tried elsewhere on the plot.  I usually grow the variety Tom Thumb as the plants are compact bearing flowers in a wide range of cheerful colours.  I always smile at the Chiltern Seeds description for these which says…If you can’t grow these, you better give up gardening as a hobby.

Both photos are from the archives, the top one was taken in July 2020, and the yellow flowers in July 2014.

Have a good week, and take care!

  1. I love nasturtiums! Yours look so pretty. Glad to hear that you’ve been able to work on the plot this weekend. It’s beginning to feel like autumn, a lovely time of year to work outdoors.

  2. It almost feels as if you are still with summer/autumn on your plot. Locally, there are sharing boxes from which, when grown, anyone can help themselves to varieties of salad leaves, Camomile and Nasturtiums. Like yours, the Nasturtiums are still flowering. I haven’t seen anyone pick salad leaves or anything else from the boxes. I have, twice. My last salad had a number of mixed colours of Nasturtiums, a few leaves from the plants, and some different types of salad leaves.

I am glad you have had a good weekend Mr F. Xxx

  3. That’s a cheeky comment from Chiltern — and true! I’m growing ‘Butterscotch’ variety which has had a number of germination failure issues, but about 80% of mine have done fine.

  4. I’m pleased you managed to get some plotting done, it’s raining again here so it’s a case of getting outdoors when you get the opportunity. I love nasturtiums but they can take over somewhat so the Tom Thumb variety seems a good choice, I may try those.
