A summer Sunday

A few months ago I cleared both the leaves and stems from both clumps of rhubarb and covered the areas with compost.

Recently the newer, and smaller , clump has grown again and last week I pulled a handful of good size stems some of which I’ve eaten. This picture shows the plants a couple of days afterwards.

I’ve started picking the blackberries, along with a few raspberries. It looks like I’ll be doing that for a few weeks judging by the amount of fruit showing on the bushes.

The nasturtiums at one end of the strawberry patch are now in full flower, including these bright orangey ones.

Sadly I’ve seen few butterflies on the plot so far this year so I was really pleased to both see, and phototograph, this Gatekeeper fluttering around on the raspberry bushes this morning.

Have a good week, and take care!

  1. A midsummer harvest for you. The blackberries and raspberries look tasty, and I’m sure the rhubarb was wonderful. Pretty nasturtiums and butterfly.

  3. Aha, it’s all coming good. The rhubarb is responding to your approach. There’s little that compares to fresh soft fruits you have grown and harvested.
Hope your weekend has been fruitful! M xxx

  4. Wow, your blackberries are early!!

You will be relieved to know that there are lots of butterflies in Normandy … so far a proliferation of Meadow Browns, a large Speckled White, Small Blues and some other whose name escapes me for the moment.

  5. Nice to see your berries, they are looking very good. The first blackberries are just ripening here too, I think it’s going to be a bumper year. The bees and butterflies suddenly turned up towards the end of last week, it was wonderful. Now the bees are enjoying the clover in the grass that I always let flower in June and July and the butterflies are enjoying the marjoram flowers and the verbena bonariensis. CJ xx

  6. Those berries are making my mouth water. There’s definitely been a lack of butterflies here this year, I’ve seen a few more around just lately but hardly any before.
