Plot flowers

Despite the miserable summer there were still plenty of flowers to be seen when I looked round the plot on Thursday morning.

The annual mallow (Malope trifida ‘Grandiflora choice mixed’) is still flowering profusely – mostly crimson, with some rose and a few white

Other bright spots are the nasturtiums

and French marigolds

I’ve been well pleased with the aquilegia, poppies, roses, cornflowers, daffodils, love-in-a-mist, linaria, sweet peas,  virginian stocks, sunflowers and others.

I’ve collected some seeds but left others to self-seed. So next year will hopefully see lots more of all these plus plenty more. I’ve got lots of packets of seeds that I didn’t use or have been given. They include Calendula officinalis ‘Sherbet Fizz’ Coreopsis tinctoria ‘Quills and Thrills’ and Zinnia ‘Peppermint Stick’ – which all have such fun names!

Whilst putting the tools away I turned round to see that this stranger had made his/her self comfortable on the wood chip path out of the wind and facing the sun!

Happy gardening!

  1. That’s funny, Liv ~ eight syllables in two words that just are so much fun to say out loud!

Flighty ~ Lovely to see the bright flowers after a blustery day here. I love the look of that mallow and its five star face. It looks like a painting. Have you had a nibble at the nasturtium? They’re tangy and are often used as edible decorations. I see more stars on the nasturtium leaves! Marigolds have a very definite fragrance, and perhaps that’s why they are used sometimes to discourage creatures. I saw that cat near my mailbox the other day! I didn’t have my camera with me though. I’ll see if I can get a photo of him next time to see if they are kitty cousins.

  2. Glo it’s grey and wet here today so it’s nice to be able to look at this entry!
The mallow is very distinctive with that star centre.
I’ll try the nasturtium next time I’m there.
I never saw the cat arrive I just turned round and there it was. As I like them I don’t it on the plot! I hope that you get to see, and photograph, yours. xx

  3. That mallow is absolutely gorgeous! My nasturtiums are only now starting to flower and my french marigold didn’t perform at all this year -_- Have a good weekend!

  4. Sinta they certainly provide a patch of welcome colour. I’ll let them self-seed and hope for a similar display next year.
My nasturtiums, like yours, have only just started to flower.
My plot neighbour Joe gave me a handful of the marigolds which didn’t start off well at all but most recovered and are now doing well.
Thanks you too! Mind you it’s rather wet here today so I’ll be settling down later to sofa fly with a good book. xx

  5. Very nice photo’s Mike, especially of your new found friend having a nap there, that should keep the rodent population down in the area….
Hows about recommending some bright, colourful flowers for my long window box, no more than six inches(ish) high and long lasting…
    Many thanks…

  6. Mr F, that is a lovely display of flowers. Most of my garden is reduced to browning greenery, apart from a couple of brave Dahlias.

Hopefully, the weather forecast looks better after Wednesday, so possibly still time to get on the allotment for a tidy, unless it has become a bog!

  7. Hi Flighty!…..Lovely to see these on a damp miserable grey evening. Like Ellie, I have a great display of greenery, but I am intrigued that nature can give us such a variety of such foliage…… ‘forty shades of green’

  8. The mallow is stunningly beautiful. You captured the color so well! Glad to see your plot has produced such nice flowers for you. Maybe all that early rain is giving a belated benefit? In any case, it looks lovely. So nice to see your new friend too. Nothing like a heat-seeking cat.

  9. Beginninghere the crimson ones are far better than the white ones! Thanks, and so am I.
There’s often plenty of flowers still to be seen now but the problem is the cold, and even frosty, nights.
You’re right about cats loving the heat! xx

  10. Hi Flighty, I said I’d pop in. Yeah, nice flowers but what an absolutely adorable cat. Has he adopted you? Still trying to find my way around your very comprehensive site – it’s all very high tech isn’t it – and I’m enjoying checking out the links.

  11. Georgie hello, welcome and thanks!
It was the first time that I’ve seen that cat but I’m happy for it to visit the plot.
I suppose that it is high tech but having been here for nearly two years I’m used to it. Enjoy finding your way around and visiting any links of interest.
    Happy gardening! xx
