Sunday morning was sunny and warm, which wasn’t what had been forecast. I called into the hut to buy peanuts for the birds and some rose food. I also spent £1 on five raffle tickets but forgot to ask what the prizes are!
It was very pleasant on the the plot but the under the surface the soil is still on the sticky side. The forecast is for dry and warm weather from mid-week on so hopefully next week will see me planting onions, potatoes and the various bulbs, corms and tubers I bought a few weeks ago.
I lightly forked some rose feed in around the roses which are all looking good with plenty of signs of growth. The aquilegia which almost disappeared during during the winter is doing well. It’ll be interesting to see which one it is as there’s lots of varieties. There are some bulbs I planted that are about to flower but I can’t remember what they are!
I repositioned a chunky sized log that I acquired last Friday, and which I’ll point out when I next include a plot photo showing it. I hoed over the area where I’m going to plant the potatoes. The original blackberry has grown considerably so I’ve now supported it. Whilst doing that I saw this really tiny plant flower
which was no bigger than a small finger nail. Isn’t it lovely!
So now I’m all set to go!
awww lookit it’s all ickle and purple 🙂

Yay! The waiting is finally over, huh?
No more ‘toes on the line’. Now there’ll be no slowing you down again until fall as things will be shooting up everywhere.

Tina hello and welcome! I do hope so as I’m getting just a little bit fed up looking at a mostly bare plot.
There’s certainly lots of signs of growth which given some sunny, warmer weather will soon be well away.

I love your little flower, a pretty delicate little thing! You really are ready to get your sleeves rolled up and get some action on the plot! The weather is certainly on the change so hopefuly some kinder weather is on the way! It is blowing a gale here! Came from nowhere!
Take care and continue to enjoy the plot! xx

Daffy it was much smaller than in my photo!
It’s been nice and warm here today, but breezy.
I’ll try and I will! xx

Flighty – it’s a lovely flower yes, but isn’t it a Speedwell, that most prolific of weeds if you let it get a hold on your plot?
It’s great to be on the plot at last isn’t it? Planted my onions today. Soil’s still too cold and sticky for spuds here though 😦

VP well spotted! Rest assured that it won’t get a hold on my plot.
It is. I was hoping to plant mine later this week. Same here with the soil. xx

I am fed up of the wind, but today was lovely and that’s not the end of it for the week. In an act of defiance, I left my coat in the office when I went to buy my lunch today! So ner! xx

I have a picture in my mind of you standing at the edge of the plot, fork positioned in a charge ahead position, between Spring and Winter, just waiting for the starting gun to fire!
I was quite amazed to see your flower, as I had taken a similar photo the other day when the smallest of blue flowers caught my eye when I was walking home. When I saw your photo, I had to immediately hunt mine up to see if it was the same type…what do you think?

As far as “what constitutes a weed”: Here are a couple of quotes that give one pause…
A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.
Doug Larson
A weed is no more than a flower in disguise, Which is seen through at once, if love give a man eyes.
James Russell Lowell
Here are a couple of sites I found interesting. The weed identification chart has some rather lovely ones pictured 🙂

Glo that sure is a vivid image!
I can’t get your small blue flower URL to work unfortunately!
Much has been said and written about weeds. My mother was always happy to let daisies and dandelions grow on the lawn, whilst her neighbour was obsessive about getting rid of them.
I’m finding The Seed Site very useful for identification of almost everything! I agree that the weed chart shows some lovely flowers. xx

Hi Flighty, isn’t it great to have the longer days again, I was out in the garden yesterday until dusk, I mulched my fruit bed and planted a couple of iris divisions. I have lots of Speedwell seedlings around the garden every year, whenever passing I pull them up, but quite honestly you can never ever eradicate any weed, so I think we must learn to love them, and who couldn’t love that little blue flower, even though a pest! The weed identification chart is certainly handy. x

Here Sunday was mainly rainy but Monday was lovely as it was sunny and warm all day. Finally we get to get cracking in the garden!
Cute little flower.
BTW Thanks for the heads up about that programme about tigers, it was wonderful!

I’m glad someone has identified the flower/weed. I was about to have to stand up and get at a book to look it up. ‘A Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of Britain and Europe’ – Schauer and Caspari. I case you’re interested, an excellent book for identifying plants as it has a ‘key’. I think it’s the ‘standard’ work for wild flowers. Next time you’ve got a spare book token or some money, you might want to check it out.

ChaOtic I knew what it was but wanted to see if anyone identified it as a weed. So well done to VP for doing so. That’s sounds like a good book which I’ll check out. Thanks for mentioning it. Cheers!

You forgot to ask what the tickets were for?? LOL, I actually laughed out loud at that! Black berry’s you say? I LOVE blackberries and so does The Peanut. That tiny little flower is adorable and a very pleasant colour too for being a weed. You can usually tell a weed by the barbed leaves but I think it adds character. very pretty!

Mylozmom if I win anything I’ll let you know. If I do it’s likely to be something I don’t need or want!
Blackberries, along with raspberries, are my favourite soft fruit.
Weeds are only plants that you don’t want growing in your garden. Many of them have lovely flowers.
Take care. xx

Good luck with your gardening at the weekend – believe it or not they’re forecasting snow again. Going to be somewhat cold (not unusual for early April). Stil, we’ve a good few days already haven’t we?

Cafecortado I’m not working tomorrow or Friday so will some spend time on the plot. I saw the weekend forecast, which if correct will see me sofa flying on Sunday. We have, but we could do with plenty more couldn’t we! Cheers!

At the first time I read this entry your Sunday morning was sunny and warm and I was glad that you were enjoying your plot. Today (April 06) there was a change in the weather and I hope it will get better next days and the sun will shine again so the weather will be perfect for gardening. Hugs, my friend.

Lady Drid last Thursday was the warmest day of the year here so far and today it snowed! That shows you how just how crazy our weather is.
It will change but gardeners are rarely ever happy as it’s always too cold, hot, dry, wet or windy ! That’s why we’re always talking about it.
Hugs for you too. xx
