Too many seeds ?

For the record here is a photo of the 60 plus packets of flower, herb and vegetable seeds that I will be sowing on Plot 124 over the next couple of months seed-2008.jpg

Bear in mind that the plot is no more than 30 by 60 feet and has a pallet patio, woodchip paths, a compost area, a soft fruit patch and so on. There’s also various bulbs, corms, tubers, onion sets and chitted potatoes to be planted. On that basis I reckon that the area for seed sowing is reduced by around a third.

Even taking into account that many won’t germinate, and some eaten by the birds, I really do think that I have enough. So I must stop browsing through the catalogues or looking at the seeds in the hardware shop and horticultural society’s hut.

I went to the plot this morning as I’d not been there since Friday. There was a cold wind so apart from topping up the bird feeders and putting up some wire trellis for the grape vine I did little else.

On my usual tour of inspection I did notice that there’s plenty of signs of growth including some tiny leaves on one of the raspberry canes! I’m also happy to say that the globe artichoke is recovering, just as I was told it would.

  1. I’m so sorry I’ve lost your entries since last December. Your entries about your plot delights me,I will read them carefully little by little from now on. Hugs, my friend.

  2. I don’t even date how many packets of seeds we have for our allotments….Mrs.LDNP and her mother did the ordering after we’d drawn up a supposedly exhaustive list but we still seem to be missing one or two essentials. …plus there is always that special thing that catches one’s eye.

For some reason we’ve got 10 different sorts of Tomato!

  3. Lady drid hello and welcome! There’s no need to be sorry! I’m so glad that you enjoy reading my entries. Once plants have grown and start to flower they should get a bit more colourful.
    Take care, and hugs. xx

  4. NiC I keep hearing about, or seeing, something else I would like to grow but I’ve got to draw the line for this year.
I hope you like tomatoes! Cheers!

When my daughter received her Kids National Geographic Magazine there was a free pack of seeds in it!
“Grow your own magic plant!” It says, It’s 25 seeds of Mimosa pudica :o) and there is a fabulous picture of that crazy Elephant from Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! on the seed packet!

  6. Daffy I know! Thanks especially to Nikki and Mildew I’ve got lots more than I would otherwise have.
That’s known as the Sensitive Plant and is both lovely and fascinating! It’s on my list for when I start to grow some indoor pot plants from seed. Apparently it is very easy to grow so do give it a try. xx

  7. Liv I will, but it is still too early unfortunately! Apart from one or two things most will be sown from the middle of next month onwards.
I’m as impatient as you but they’ll grow better, and quicker, once the ground starts to warm up and there’s little likelihood of frost.

  8. Hi Flighty, I’ve noticed leaves on my raspberry canes too! It has been very cold here today. The only thing I have done outside in the garden, is to put the rubbish out for the binmen tomorrow. I still haven’t checked through my seeds yet, or bought any more, I am really behind. Good job I have decided not to grow much from seed this year, I need to spend the time on other things in the garden, although I want to have tomatoes, runner beans, summer squash and other vegetables etc. I can’t believe you have bought all those seeds, you will have to become a full-time allotmenteer with that lot! x

  9. Louise hello! I’ve got nine canes but only one is showing leaves so far. I was there this morning and after ten minutes my hands were numb with cold!
I bought about half of them, with the rest coming mostly from Nikki and Mildew. Once I get started I’ll probably be there most days, weather permitting, even if it’s for only half an hour or so. xx

  10. Purplefreak it is indeed! Some packets contain little more than a handful of quite large ones, others literally thousands which are minute specks. xx

  11. Liv if it was like that here now then the summer would surely be far too hot and dry, bringing gardeners other problems! Those tomatoes do look good! xx

  12. I’ve got leaves on my raspberries too Flighty! And you can never have enough seeds in my view – even when you’re head’s going ‘OK, where are you going to fit them all in then?’. That’s what happened to me last week with The Pass the Parcel posting!
