I’m not one for using any herbs when I cook but I am going to have a small herb patch on the plot.
I was given a Rosemary last autumn which is a classic herb, and well known for remembrance.
I’ve ordered a packet of mixed culinary herbs which contains Basil, Parsley, Sage, Summer Savory, Thyme and several others. These are a mix of annuals and perennials, and it will be interesting to see how they grow.
I’ve also bought a packet of seeds of this herb
Chiltern Seeds Vegbook says…This has been developed especially for ornamental use, being very floriferous, branched and compact. It is very fragrant, has green foliage and small creamy-white flowers with attractive purple bracts. There may be better ones to cook with but not many to look at.
You will guess why I have to grow this one when I tell you that it is Basil ‘Magical Michael‘.
Yummy – does this mean you’re now converted to using them in cooking? Or are you using them to attract beneficial insects to your plot?
Id hope it’s both. French Tarragon’s a good one, so’s Winter Savory. Unlike it’s summer cousin it’s a perennial…

VP not yet but I probably will, so I’m happy to let the insects help themselves!
I’ll bear those in mind, thanks.

Wow VP! You sure do comment with speed! :o)
Hi Flighty, I love the smells of herbs. We do plan a little herb garden of our own if the rabbits allow!
I used to work at a little Bed & Breakfast when I was a teenager and the owner used to always send me to the garden to cut fresh chives for the soup or mint leaves for the Lamb stew…

Daffy hello! I know someone whose small herb garden has got bigger every year.
Even if I don’t use what I grow for cooking I’ll be happy for my plot neighbours to help themselves, or just leave it to admire, smell and for the insects.

I love growing herbs, cooking with them (or just throw them in a salade) or putting a leaf or two in a cuppa tea or in my bath. In my veggie garden I have one bed for growing herbs but I could easily fill up my whole garden with them. Bees love most of them too, another bonus. 😉

Yolanda hello! Obviously herbs are an essential part of any garden. One of my plot neighbours has a beehive so he and his bees will be happy!

Basil has a place in the yard as close to kitchen door as I can manage. Some years we have pesto feasts, some years most of the basil enjoying is from its lovely scent in the breeze.
I think I’m going to burst if this bitter cold and snow doesn’t end soon! We can’t even plant outdoors here with any confidence until late May.
I…need…gardening.

I love herbs in cooking but don’t have a dedicated spot for herbs – they’ve kind of grown in spite of me. Hoping to grow basil to go with the tomatoes this season. Curly parsley is such a nice looking herb (as are many others) that they’re great whether you plan to use them or not! I like rosemary, too, Flighty (though only in small amounts in cooking, as the flavor can be overpowering).

I’ve got thyme, sage, basil, oregano seeds sown in pots beneath a coldframe. Hoping to have some herbs this year for cooking ^_^ Nothing like cooking with fresh herbs.

Flighty, you have induced a child hood flashback, to my mums neighbour, (think Mrs Overall from Acorn Antiques) rat a tat tatting on the kitchen window, ‘just getting a bit of mint, she would call as she helped her self from our clump.
Can you have your herbs where you brush past them, so you get the most of the scent?
Must haves for me, mint, rosemary, chives and oregano.
Only tried basil once and it didn’t work out, we are not very Mediterranean up here!

Flighty, I forgot to ask if you have come across Madeline Giddens’ website, Mad about Herbs.

It’s full of information about herbs and offers suggestions for using herbs in cooking and healing, as well as growing them.

Simplelsie hello! I see that there are lots of different Basils, is there one that you prefer?
I really do sympathise on your winter weather, and rather plaintive last line. Let’s hope that spring comes soon for you and that you have a great gardening summer.

Nikki that doesn’t surprise me at all! Which Basil did you have in mind?
I can see me really getting ‘into’ herbs!

Uphilldowndale I can always remember getting my mum some mint from down the garden when I was a young boy.
My herb patch is alongside one of the paths so yes! I’m not very Mediterranean down here either!

Angelfeet no, so thanks for that link. I’ll have a good look at it later on, and also add it to my Plot People list.

So glad to see that you’re growing herbs. We’re crazy about them not just for food, but for beauty. Even if you don’t eat them, they’ll add so much beauty to your garden. Good luck!

Ooh, I’d love my own herb garden, Flighty! It’s just the best to pop out to the garden and pick some fresh stuff for the meal you’re cooking. We’ve only got some wonderfully fragrant bay bushes at the mo’, but I think I shall have to clear a patch for other herbs soon too 🙂 I just hope my chilli plants turn out okay! xxx

Pandy I’m sure that you’ve got a small patch you can use, or how about a container or two! The Chilli plants sound interesting, do let us know how you get on with them. xx

I cook with herbs all the time. I’m afraid I have to get them from the shop though.
Saw this event on a blog and thought it might be of interest to you. It doen’t look like there’s one near you though.

Chaotic hello! I’m glad to hear it. Can’t you grow some in pots? That looks interesting, thanks for mentioning it. Perhaps I should start my own!
By the way did you get my card I sent you sometime late last year. It was during the postal strikes so I hope that it didn’t get lost.

Sheesh, there’s a lot of basil to choose from. Though for cooking, I will probably stick to plain sweet basil. I’ve a hankering to try some Vietnamese herbs, though I’ve had no luck in the past. Sounds like a good reason to try again, no? No?!

Nikki you’re not kidding, the catalogue I have has over 20 in it!
Sweet basil is at the top of the list.
That sounds rather exotic. I’m sure that you do really want to try again, yes? Yes?!

Ooh, herbs are so satisfying to grow. Even if you don’t start using them in your cooking – and I am sure once you see them you will be tempted – I hope you can find recipients who will enjoy a few sprigs. xx

Olivia from other comments it certainly looks that way! I’m sure that I will as well. I’ll be more than happy to let plot neighbours, and others, share my herbs. xx

You’ll have to at least try them if you’re growing them Flighty 😉
Rosemary is lovely broken up and rubbed over a joint of meat, or throw a few sprigs into the tray with your roast potatos… Basil is great ripped up and put in a tomato based pata sause…. mmmm yummy! 🙂

I want to start a little herb and veggie garden this year for Cooper. I’ve heard that some herbs can take over your garden though so should be planted in pots on their own. Have you heard that?

Paul I certainly will! I’ll bear in mind both of those, which sound delicious. Cheers!

Blueandtigger hello! That sounds like a great idea. I know that mint is like that and should be grown in a pot, and there may well be others.

Mint… I’ll be sure to remember that. All though, I don’t think I’ll venture to herbs just yet. I’ll start with the very simple and easy to grow veggies first. 🙂 My green thumb is more yellow than green :$

Blueandtigger do as it’s the kind of plant that can literally take over a garden!
That sounds like a good idea. I’ve still to decide what veggies I’m going to have, and like you it’ll be the easy to grow ones!
It’ll soon change colour once you get going! Take care.
