This weekend…

is The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

I’ve enjoyed doing this the past few years, although I’ve not actually seen many birds, or little of real interest. Perhaps this year I’ll get to see one, or more, of these which I sometimes hear but have only seen once !

This year I shall be doing it from the allotment site on Sunday morning. Thankfully the weather forecast is looking reasonable for London.

If you enjoy getting out in the countryside then it’s well worth taking a look at When to Watch Wildlife. I think that it’s an excellent site full of useful information for any time of the year.

Tomorrow evening’s Natural World on BBC2 at 8.00pm, and repeated on Sunday at 6.10pm, is Tiger Kill. In it Simon King travels to India, where he’s never been before, to see his first wild tiger. I like big cats so I shall be watching this programme with great interest.

Sunday evening will, I’m sure, see many gardeners settling down to watch the first, of ten, programmes in the new series Around the World in 80 Gardens. Starting at 9.00pm on BBC2 we’ll see Monty Don travelling the world looking at at a wide range of fabulous gardens. This week he’s in Mexico and Cuba so expect to see plenty of colourful and exotic plants.Ā  If you miss it it’s being repeated next Tuesday on BBC2 at 7.00pm.

Have a good weekend !

  1. We”ll do it Sunday too from the conservatory or the shed, as we can use the shed as a hide, its perfectly positioned.
Not sure about the weather, its sunny today but windy and the weather is pretty much the same for the weekend I think with scattered showers. We’ll see. :o)
I’m looking forward to Tiger Kill, it doesn’t give too much away but I hope they managed to get the footage they are so desperate to catch on camera.

  2. Hi Flighty,

I’m posting an RSPB reminder on my blog tomorrow. Will have to squeeze my hour in at home before I go off for a Girls’ Weekend at a local spa!

I’ve got Monty Don on my must see list for when I get back. I expect all 80 gardens will go on the same list too šŸ™‚

  3. I heard Garden Watch mentioned on Radio4 this morning. Mrs Pixel commented about the accuracy of the bird spotting after her school did a grand job encouraging all the kids to take part last year.
Sightings of Parrots, Vultures, Humming Birds and Flamingos may have skewed the count just a little !!!

  4. Crap, it’s the dead of the winter here and really, not many birds stick around this time of year. I’ll have to check on the programing for that Big Cat thing. We don’t get BBC but we do have a lot of other wild life/outdoor channel’s so I’ll look it up. Hope you have a fab weekend!

  5. Friends in London have two or three parakeets on their bird feeder at a time, they had a friend staying from Australia, who was so delighted to see them that she insisted on going out and buying more seed and food for them.

I heard and saw a lot in Kew Gardens, at first I thought they were woodpeckers.

Monty Don at 9 on a Sunday evening, ideal; a nice log fire and a glass of wine, perfect

  6. Daffy fingers crossed that we all have good weather, and see lots of birds including some good ones.
As you say it should be a good programme, and I bet they do!
    Enjoy your weekend xx

  7. VP hello! Sounds like you’re going to have a fun, and relaxing,
    weekend.
I think that a lot of the gardens being shown will end up on peoples must see list!
I hoping to do some work on the plot if it’s dried out enough.

  8. Blue Pixel I draw the line at vultures but wouldn’t mind the others! It’s good to get kids involved with something like this as it’s their future. Cheers!

  9. Uphilldowndale A friend of mine sees a flock of them nearly every day. It’s very disconcerting when you first see them flying around in the outer suburbs of London.
I think that it will prove to be a very watchable series, and as you say perfect Sunday evening viewing.

  10. Nikki what indeed! I’ve not watched any since Sunday, and I’ll only be watching what I’ve mentioned in this entry over the weekend.
    Thanks, and you too! xx

  11. I plan to take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch sometime tomorrow afternoon. Am wondering if I should do it my garden or in a friend’s. She’s not too bothered about it, but her garden gets loads more birds than mine has! I’ve only seen a woodpigeon or two.

  12. I watched Tiger Kill and was surprised that, having travelled all over the world to film, Simon King had never been to India.

Do let us know what birds you saw on Sunday! I know that birds still exist in London because I’ve heard them twittering at 2am, even a couple of weeks ago…You should see how excited I get when I see a bird singing on television, it’s quite pitiful really!

  13. Olivia hello, I hope that you’re feeling better! I was surprised at that as well, I bet that now he’s been he’ll go back again.
There’ll be details of what I saw in my next entry. I hear birds singing during the night which I don’t mind, unlike the noise the foxes make!
That’s not pitiful at all! Take care xx

  14. Well, I am so bird starved that I flap my hands at birdsong on the TELLY…yes, that’s sad.

Specially as, once upon a time, I held hummingbirds in my hands!

No, not better yet. My boss thinks I should take the week off. Me complain? No, this is the rest I should have had long ago.
