1.
Fandom: Final Fantasy IX
2.
Character Name: Kuja
3a.
Background/History Link: Here.
4.
Point in Canon: After failing to obtain Alexander, and destroying Alexandria.
5.
Personality: Observing from a distance, you'll quickly learn that Kuja is vain, self-centered and, put simply, a narcissist. To call him arrogant would be putting it nicely, as he possesses an excessive sense of self-importance and superiority. Nothing can be compared to him, in his mind, and to try would be an insult. Because of this, he is keen to assert his own individuality, wishing to be viewed as unique. It's no wonder that he is also largely preoccupied with aesthetics, which is evident from the way he presents himself to his frequent use of insults such as 'fat' and 'ugly'.
Though he holds himself in such a high regard, his opinion of others is hardly as generous. The people around him will likely find themselves under constant scrutiny, with their flaws being shamelessly judged and exploited as a means to further assert his own superiority. Really, he lacks the capacity to empathize with others, as his happiness is the only thing that matters. He believes that the world should revolve around him and him alone, and his world does just that.
These traits also heavily influence his social relationships and interactions. Kuja is a driven, ambitious individual, setting high goals and going to greater lengths to achieve them. At times, he can even be considered reckless, not caring who or what he has to go through to get his way. As such, the people around him could be considered objects or toys, ones he uses to achieve his goals and better himself. Considering how highly he regards himself, it's only natural that he's extremely picky about who he associates with. He enjoys being well connected, preferring to surround himself with a number of people who will better help him achieve his goals.
It doesn't hurt that he knows his way around people, and by use of a charming and seemingly sincere front, he is able to appeal to them and win their favor. Don't let his charm fool you, however. He is shamelessly two-faced, flattering you in one breath, and most likely insulting you in the next. The charming exterior only last as long as you are useful to him, whether it be for your power, wealth, or simple conversation. Once your purpose is served, it'll become clear he never intended to keep his promises. If it starts to seem likely that things won't go his way, his mood can turn rather foul and he becomes snappy, pushy, and demanding. He won't hesitate to let you know when he's irritated, and it's
certainly your responsibility to fix it.
There is also another, more vicious side to him that derives great pleasure from the suffering of others. In essence, he is a shit disturber, provoking the most negative of feelings for his own gain. To do this, he often uses callous, taunting sarcasm, or simple manipulation designed to humiliate and antagonize. It's unsurprising, really, considering the role he served as an Angel of Death: Kuja was
created for the purpose of causing war and conflict, and has quite a talent for it.
6.
Class: Elementalist.
7.
Abilities: Though he lacks any physical abilities or skills, he makes up for it with the fact that he is a
fantastic mage. With the most powerful offensive spells in his arsenal and expert use of them, he'll prove to be trouble to even the strongest opponents. On top of that, he also appears to be largely immune to physical injury, the dragon king Bahamut only able to just
barely damage him.
As for the spells he'll be bringing along with him:
I. Flare Star ¬ Deals massive amounts of non-elemental damage and ignores the 'reflect' status.
II. Ultima ¬ Another non-elemental spell, usually attacking multiple targets, bypassing and overpowering magic defense and barriers. Due to the large amount of power (or MP) it requires, it can't be used too often.
III. Thundaga ¬ The most powerful of lightning-based spells, and his only elemental attack.
Though he does possess powerful magic, Kuja is not the type to get his hands dirty. More often than not, he'll try to use other methods (or people) to get his way, before resorting to violence himself.
8.
Preferred Army: Verity.
9.
Preferred Position: Civilian.
10.
Non-Military Job: Interrogator.
Section III: *SAMPLES*
1.
First-person Sample: Just
what is making that boorish noise? Some of us are
trying to enjoy our peace and quiet.
[ A pause, voice sounding more impatient when he speaks again. ]Well? Is someone going to fix it, or do you not mind living like
barbarians?
[ Another pause, hoping that he finally got through to them. Then, a book snaps shut and, if possible, even more impatiently. ]...I needn't have asked.
2.
Third-person Sample: Having spent so long under the assumption that he would
never perish, it was fair to say that Kuja had spared little thought what would happen to him once he ceased to exist. Of course, he was a man who cherished his comforts, and a mansion would have been high on his list had he been given a choice. This, however, was hardly what he would have envisioned.
For one, there were simply too many people milling about, and it was never in his nature to
share.
But then, this must be the penalty of a fallen
angel, he thought bitterly, and, just maybe, dolefully. Moving on from that, the servants were another wonder whom he found simultaneously ghastly and intriguing. A shameless, selfish thought surfaced as he wondered whether he, too, would be reduced to what
they were; faceless dregs designed to cater the whims of one meddling in affairs far too big for them.
That final thought struck an all-too familiar bell as memories of the Genomes and Black Mages (and, as Garland had so rightly declared, Kuja himself) came to mind, and quickly the idea was purged. Not for a moment would he consider that a possibility, as it was simply out of the question.
In the end, hadn't he always gotten what he wanted? Even as he thought it, there was an unpleasant pang in his pride, telling him
that's not true. And really, it wasn't, not in the slightest. Although recent events had served to broaden his perspective a smudge, if his past self could see him now, he would be absolutely appalled. Furious at the state of affairs he would eventually find himself in.
It was funny how death could make you think so far ahead, really. Though he
wanted to (and before, he would have without question), deep down, he couldn't deny that it was indeed a possibility. These thoughts continued to swirl unpleasantly around his mind as he stood in quiet, seething contemplation, posed with a hand on his hip, the other curling a thoughtful finger over his lips.
Already, it had felt like ages since he tore his gaze from the window, and even longer since that offensive butler had showed him to his quarters. A fleeting thought was spared, wondering whether the demon had the courtesy to leave him to himself, and without bothering to check the hand on his hip shifted from it's former position, waving dismissively in the air beside him.
"Shoo," he snapped at the room, commanding anything that might have lingered to leave, eyes still fixed on the window. "I need some time to myself."
Neglecting to check whether they had listened, he continued to gaze out the window, the finger on his lip shifting, catching the nail between his teeth. He didn't bite it (what good would mutilating himself do?), but the gesture had a good enough effect.
Oh, just what was he going to do?
