Fast – Festival for Architecture Schools of Tomorrow

Inspired by the overarching theme of the UIA 2026 Congress – Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition – FAST 2025 aims to explore, over the course of five festival days, the role of architecture in fostering trust at social, community, and professional levels. Building on the well-established format of Talks, Exhibitions, and Activations, this edition draws inspiration from the UIA’s directions, making the central theme of the festival Becoming Trustworthy, focused on the built environment’s ability to inspire transparency, safety, and solidarity. Through participatory design and context-sensitive solutions, FAST 2025 highlights practices that restore and strengthen the relationship between institutions, communities, and the architectural profession. Local examples may include reconstruction projects in vulnerable areas or initiatives that reinforce the connection between public administration and architects, with trust and collaboration serving as cornerstones for urban life.

Inspirat de tema generală a Congresului UIA 2026 – Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition – FAST 2025 își propune să exploreze, pe parcursul a cinci zile de festival, rolul arhitecturii în cultivarea încrederii la nivel social, comunitar și profesional. Continuând structura deja consacrată prin Talks, Exhibitions și Activations, această ediție se inspiră din direcțiile UIA și tema centrală a festivalului devine Becoming Thustworthy: Arhitectura ca mediu al încrederii, concentrându-se pe capacitatea spațiului construit de a inspira transparență, siguranță și solidaritate. Prin design participativ și soluții adaptate contextului, FAST 2025 aduce în prim-plan practici care reîntregesc relația dintre instituții, comunități și profesia de arhitect. Exemplele locale pot include proiecte de reconstrucție în zone vulnerabile sau inițiative care întăresc legătura dintre administrație și arhitecți, având încrederea și colaborarea ca repere pentru viața urbană.

The TALKS conference series investigates how architecture can foster trust—in public space, in professional collaboration, and in the relationship between communities and institutions. Under the theme “Becoming trustworthy / architecture as a medium of trust”, FAST 2025 features international lectures curated by the Romanian Order of Architects (OAR), an academic conference hosted by the Faculty of Architecture in Iași, and workshops developed in collaboration with universities from Romania and abroad.

Secțiunea de conferințe TALKS își propune să exploreze rolul arhitecturii în cultivarea încrederii, în spațiul public, în colaborările profesionale și în relația dintre comunități și instituții. Sub tema „Becoming trustworthy / arhitectura ca mediu al încrederii”, FAST 2025 aduce prelegeri internaționale organizate de Ordinul Arhitecților din România (OAR), o conferință academică găzduită de Facultatea de Arhitectură din Iași și ateliere dezvoltate în parteneriat cu universități din țară și din străinătate.

TALKS / DEZBATERI

“Convergence X5” introduces a more focused exhibition format, allowing each school to curate its own content, within a 40-panel limit. The material will showcase the perspectives of various design studios from Romanian architecture schools, addressing one of the festival’s three sub-themes. As in the first two editions, the exhibition will travel to the five architecture faculties in Romania: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, and Oradea.

„Convergence X5” propune un format expozițional mai concentrat, oferind fiecărei școli posibilitatea de a-și curatoria conținutul propriu, în limita a 40 de panouri. Materialele prezentate vor reflecta direcțiile atelierelor din școlile de arhitectură din România, în raport cu una dintre cele trei sub-teme ale festivalului. La fel ca în primele două ediții, expoziția va fi itinerată la cele cinci facultăți de arhitectură din România: București, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași și Oradea.

EXHIBITIONS / EXPOZIȚII

As a parallel event, the five participating schools will design, under the coordination of the host faculty, an architectural installation inspired by the festival’s general theme. The resulting pavilion will reflect the creativity and collaboration of architecture students from across the country and will become a meaningful addition to the architectural and cultural landscape of Iași. Continuing the tradition of the first two editions, this initiative will stand as a symbol of unity and innovation in architecture, encouraging dialogue and future professional connections.

Acest conținut va reflecta abordările diferitelor ateliere din școlile de arhitectură din România, care tratează una dintre cele trei sub-teme ale festivalului. La fel ca în prima ediție, această expoziție va fi itinerată la fiecare dintre cele cinci facultăți de arhitectură din România: București, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași și Oradea.

The Turkish Bath

RO: Baia Turcească din Iași este o clădire monumentală construită la sfârșitul secolului XIX, cu influențe arhitecturale orientale și o poveste fascinantă ce datează încă din perioada domniei lui Vasile Lupu. După aproape 90 de ani de funcționare ca baie publică, la începutul secolului XXI, clădirea a devenit un spațiu dedicat evenimentelor de artă contemporană, devenind astfel un punct de atracție pentru artiștii din întreaga lume.
La FAST 2025, Baia Turcească va găzdui expoziția X5, o selecție de proiecte realizate în cadrul atelierelor și workshopurilor organizate pe parcursul evenimentului.
EN: The Turkish Bath in Iași is a monumental building constructed at the end of the 19th century, with architectural influences from the Orient and a fascinating history dating back to the reign of Vasile Lupu. After nearly 90 years of functioning as a public bathhouse, in the early 21st century, the building became a space for contemporary art events, turning into a magnet for artists worldwide.
During FAST 2025, the Turkish Bath will host the X5 exhibition, showcasing a curated selection of projects created during the event’s workshops and ateliers.

Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre

RO: Teatrul Național „Vasile Alecsandri” din Iași este una dintre cele mai spectaculoase clădiri de patrimoniu din România, proiectată de arhitecții vienezi Fellner și Helmer și inaugurată în 1896. Adăpostește atât teatrul, cât și Opera Națională Română din Iași, iar interiorul său decorat în stil baroc-rococo este considerat un adevărat monument de artă. A fost primul loc din Iași iluminat electric, grație propriei uzine.
La FAST 2025, Teatrul Național va găzdui secțiunea TALKS, desfășurată de marți până joi, oferind un spațiu de dialog între arhitecți, artiști și specialiști din țară și din străinătate despre orașe, patrimoniu și viitor.
EN: The “Vasile Alecsandri” National Theatre in Iași is one of Romania’s most spectacular heritage buildings, designed by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer and inaugurated in 1896. It hosts both the theatre and the Romanian National Opera of Iași, and its baroque-rococo interior is regarded as a true work of art. It was also the first place in Iași to be lit electrically, thanks to its own power plant.
During FAST 2025, the National Theatre will host the TALKS section, taking place from Tuesday to Thursday, creating a space for dialogue between architects, artists, and experts from Romania and abroad about cities, heritage, and the future.

G. M. Cantacuzino Faculty of Architecture

RO: Facultatea de Arhitectură „G. M. Cantacuzino” din Iași a fost înființată în 1970 sub coordonarea arhitectului Nicolae Porumbescu, un reper al arhitecturii moderne românești. Clădirea facultății, proiectată tot de acesta, este o lecție de arhitectură practică, cu o curte interioară luminoasă și un spațiu central dominat de o scară monumentală ce leagă și definește volumul.
La FAST 2025, la sediul facultății va fi vernisată expoziția GMC, care prezintă rezultatele atelierelor studențești și ale workshopurilor coordonate de cadrele didactice, cu teme variate – de la fotografie de arhitectură și cartografiere, până la explorarea aplicării inteligenței artificiale în practica profesională.
EN: G. M. Cantacuzino Faculty of Architecture in Iași was established in 1970 under the guidance of architect Nicolae Porumbescu, a key figure in Romanian modern architecture. The faculty building, also designed by him, serves as a practical lesson in architecture, featuring a bright inner courtyard and a central space dominated by a monumental staircase that connects and defines the volume.
During FAST 2025, the faculty will host the GMC exhibition, showcasing the results of student studios and workshops coordinated by faculty members. The exhibition covers a wide range of topics—from architectural photography and mapping to exploring the use of artificial intelligence in professional practice.

Aula Magna ``Carmen Sylva” of Gheorghe Asachi Technical University

RO: Palatul Universitar din Copou, construit între 1893 și 1897, este un reper al arhitecturii eclectice din Iași. Aula Magna „Carmen Sylva”, parte a acestui ansamblu, a găzduit de-a lungul timpului momente marcante, printre care și ședințele Senatului României în perioada Primului Război Mondial.
În cadrul FAST 2025, Aula Magna „Carmen Sylva” și Sala Pașilor Pierduți – spațiul frontal al holului-foyer care precede Aula – vor găzdui expoziția conferințelor Convergence & Alumni, un punct de întâlnire al prezentărilor și proiectelor dedicate comunității academice și profesionale. Tot aici vor avea loc și întâlniri dedicate arhitecților aflați în diferite etape ale carierei profesionale: ateliere pentru stagiari, sesiuni de discuții despre antreprenoriat și business, precum și activități dedicate celor interesați de arhitectura în administrația publică. Evenimentele sunt organizate în parteneriat cu filiala OAR Iași.
EN: The University Palace in Copou, built between 1893 and 1897, is a landmark of eclectic architecture in Iași. The Aula Magna “Carmen Sylva,” part of this ensemble, has hosted important moments in Romanian history, including the Senate’s meetings during World War I.
During FAST 2025, the Aula Magna “Carmen Sylva” and the Hall of Lost Steps – the frontal foyer space preceding the Aula – will host the Convergence & Alumni exhibition, presenting conference projects and displays connected to the academic and professional community. The location will also become a meeting point for architects at various stages of their careers: workshops for interns, sessions about entrepreneurship and business strategy, and discussions for those exploring public administration architecture. The events are organized in partnership with the Iași branch of OAR.

The first night of the TALKS series will take place at the Iași National Opera, marking the opening of FAST 2025. This edition will feature keynote presentations by Ioana Chifu and Onar Stănescu from Muromuro Studio, Ingeborg Christiane Hau from the Danish Academy of Architecture, and Gideon Maasland, Director at MVRDV. Through their diverse practices — spanning design, research, and large-scale architectural production — the speakers will explore how architecture can act as a framework for collaboration, trust, and creative exchange. The evening will offer an engaging dialogue on contemporary architectural thinking, from experimental practice to sustainable innovation.

Pablo Allard

Pablo Allard, architect with a Doctorate and MAUD from Harvard GSD, is Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Arts at Universidad del Desarrollo in Chile. Co-founder of ELEMENTAL and Allard & Partners, he is renowned for his work in social housing, sustainable mobility, and post-disaster reconstruction, leading Chile’s urban recovery after the 2010 earthquake and tsunami.

Francesca Torzo

Francesca Torzo (Padova, 1975) studied in Barcelona, Mendrisio, and Venice, graduating with honours in 2001. She founded her practice in Genoa in 2008 and teaches in Bergen and Mendrisio. Her acclaimed project Z33 House for Contemporary Art in Hasselt received the Piranesi Award (2018), Premio Italiano di Architettura (2020), and was a Mies van der Rohe Award finalist (2022).

Workshops – closing exhibition

The Workshops Vernissage showcases the results of three intensive workshops — Transformations, Affective Cartographies, and The Broken Telephone (with Images) — developed over two days during the festival. Participants explored themes of sustainability, perception, and communication through collaborative design experiments. The exhibition invites visitors to experience how these explorations materialized into creative, thought-provoking installations reflecting the spirit of FAST 2025.

Trustworthy – Young Architects Panel

Organized by the OAR Iași Branch, this interactive session is dedicated to young and trainee architects. Using a specially designed board game as a conversation starter, participants will explore themes of professional growth and early career experiences in a relaxed, engaging format. The event also includes the presentation of the Internship Brochure and related resources that support emerging architects.

TALKS: Jonas Janke and Andrea Deplazes @ Iași National Opera

The third and last evening of the TALKS series at the Iași National Opera concludes FAST 2025 with two keynote lectures by Jonas Janke, partner at bplus.xyz in Berlin, and Andrea Deplazes, professor at ETH Zürich and co-founder of Bearth + Deplazes Architekten AG. Both architects will address the festival’s theme, “Architecture as a Framework for Collaboration and Trust,” through the lens of material honesty, adaptive reuse, and the ethics of construction. The evening will explore how contemporary architectural practice can build credibility and care — from the design process to the making of spaces that endure.

Jonas Janke

Jonas Janke is an architect and partner at bplus.xyz, Berlin. Trained as both a draughtsman and architect, he studied in Hamburg, Stockholm, and Berlin. A member of the 2038 German Pavilion team at the Venice Biennale 2021, his current work focuses on ecological construction methods, adaptive reuse, and pragmatic material innovation.
