Extra RAM is a memory optimization tool for Windows. It is a very lightweight app that constantly scans your RAM memory usage. Its main window shows a bar with the percentage and megabytes of free memory in real time. Whenever system available memory is too low, you can optimize it by clicking on a button. This will free up memory. I don't exactly know how the application does it. But it seems to work. There is also a setting to automatically optimize your RAM whenever available memory falls below a set number of megabytes. Thus, you can run Extra RAM on the background set to automatically optimize memory for you.

There are a few things that are worth mentioning about this whole optimization focus. Extra RAM won't add memory to your system, it will just prevent other applications from using your RAM or it will simply terminate other applications. If the other running applications don't have enough memory, they will start to get slow and might even crash. That is why you should know what you are doing before you run this.

All in all, while looking at the memory monitor built-in with Extra RAM, I did notice the memory available increasing and decreasing, and it leveled up after a few minutes of usage. I have no way of telling if Extra RAM did it, or if the behavior was natural of my system. You should give it a try.

Pros

  • It seemed to work

Cons

  • But it took a while for memory to free up (if it was the application who did it anyway)
