The “why” of it all
On the January 7, 2026 episode of The Josh Marshall Podcast, during a discussion of the Trump regime’s Venezuela adventure, Josh and Kate got to discussing the reasons for the whole affair, and I think it’s worth pulling out this part in particular:
And we have this kind of, there’s this kind of chaotic management style, if you want to call it a management style, in the Trump government. And so these people want to do it and they’re all kind of pushing forward, and Trump kind of generally thinks it’s awesome being tough, and, you know, he’s got this beef with Maduro that maybe for like rigging the 2020 election, right? So basically, you’ve got these different factions, they all want to do something like this for slightly different reasons.
The whole sort of coin of the realm in this thing is you get your project in front of Trump, make it sound awesome, and then you’re good to go. And Trump kind of thinks this is awesome, and this just created this forward momentum in the administration. So and kind of, and that’s how we got here.
And so a lot of the discussion about, you know, what’s the real reason? Not this, not the cover reason, but the real reason. And I think it’s kind of overdetermined, like there’s probably not a real reason.”
I think that is exactly right and more broadly, it is a good lens through which to view nearly everything the Trump regime is doing. That’s not to say that there are not guiding themes to all of it—white supremacy and rolling back progressive reforms going back to the New Deal are some big ones—but I tend to think that there are bunch of different camps and parties and individuals all pushing their own stuff. Whoever makes it through the scrum on any given day and manages to
To the extent that there is any guiding strategy for Trump himself, I think it mostly comes down to whatever gets him through the current moment feeling like he has won. If there’s some white nationalism, chauvinism, or hating of foreigners tossed in, that’s just gravy for him.
But I don’t think there is much more to it than that. The regime is filled with crooks and hustlers and idealogical weirdos, and they’re all fighting to push whatever their particular interest or scheme is. Sometimes two or more of them align, other times they don’t, and it all orbits around a loose and shaggy system of reactionary, resentful beliefs.
