Tim Houston is a Canadian politician, and accountant. He has been Premier of Nova Scotia, since August 31, 2021, and Leader of the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia, since October 27, 2018. He was previously Leader of the Opposition in Nova Scotia, from October 27, 2018 to August 31, 2021, and Chair of the Council of the Federation, from July 12, 2023 to August 1, 2024.

He was raised in a military family, on bases around Canada. He is married to Carol, with whom he has two children.

Tim’s paternal grandfather was Richard Bruce “Dick” Houston (the son of Lloyd Houston and Lena May Johnson). Richard was born in Chatham-Kent, Kent, Ontario. Lloyd was born in Kent, the son of Ninian Clarence Houston and Christena/Christy Ann Babcock. Lena was the daughter of John F. Johnson and Martha Stenton.

Tim’s paternal grandmother was Doris Irene Vansickle (the daughter of John Roy Vansickle and Myrtle Mabel/Mable Sayers). Doris was born in Chatham-Kent, Kent, Ontario. John was born in Lambton, Ontario, the son of Alem Vansickle, whose paternal grandparents were from New Jersey; and of Mary Cross, whose paternal grandfather was English. Tim’s great-grandmother Myrtle was born in Lambton, the daughter of James Sayers, whose parents were English, his father from Whitby, Yorkshire and his mother from Bilsdale, Yorkshire; and of Mary McGuire, whose parents were Irish, from Antrim and Tyrone, respectively.

Tim’s maternal grandfather was Jerome Edward Burke (the son of Ambrose Burke and Mary Elizabeth Swayers/Swyers/Swires). Jerome was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ambrose was born in Portuguese Cove, Nova Scotia, the son of Benjamine/Bengamine Burke and Sarah. Elizabeth was born in St. Georges, Newfoundland, the daughter of Edmund Swayers and Mary.

Tim’s maternal grandmother was Dorothy Mary Ryder (the daughter of Charles Samuel Ryder and Gertrude Eveline Forrestall). Dorothy was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Charles was born in Halifax, the son of George W. Ryder and Mary Ann Conrad. Gertrude was born in Halifax, the daughter of Edmund A. Forrestall and Mary Ann Lynch.
