Rosemary Harris is a British-American actress. She has had a long career in theatre, film, and television, blending classical stage work, including respected Shakespearean and Broadway stage roles; with screen performances. She played Aunt May in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007). Her screen roles also include the films Beau Brummell, The Shiralee, Uncle Vanya (1963), A Flea in Her Ear, The Boys from Brazil, The Ploughman’s Lunch, Crossing Delancey, The Delinquents, The Bridge (1992), Tom & Viv, Hamlet (1996), My Life So Far, Sunshine (1999), The Gift (2000), Blow Dry, Being Julia, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Is Anybody There?, This Means War, and The von Trapp Family: A Life of Music; the series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Search Party; the mini-series Notorious Woman, Holocaust (1978), The Chisholms, and The Camomile Lawn; the made-for-tv productions Dial M for Murder (1958), The Royal Family (1977), To the Lighthouse, Summer Day’s Dream, The Little Riders, and Death of a Salesman (1996); and the video game Dark Side of the Moon.

Rosemary is the daughter of Enid Maude Frances (Campion) and Stafford Berkeley Harris, who was in the Royal Air Force. She spent time in India during her childhood’s for her father’s work. She was married to American novelist John Ehle, until his death. Their daughter is actress Jennifer Ehle.

Rosemary’s paternal grandfather was George Henry Harris (the son of William Stanley Long Harris and Mary Jefferson). Mary’s father was born on Antigua, in Antigua and Barbuda.

Rosemary’s paternal grandmother was Bertha Josephine Berkeley (the daughter of Miles Berkeley and Bertha Hermine Frederike Schnell). Bertha was born in Mediaș, Sibiu County, Transylvania, Romania. Miles was English, from Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire, the son of Miles Joseph Berkeley, a British cryptogamist and clergyman; who was one of the founders of plant pathology, known in botanical nomenclature by the standard author abbreviation “Berk.” Rosemary’s great-grandmother Bertha likely was of Transylvanian Saxon (German) descent.

Rosemary’s maternal grandfather was William Henry Campion (the son of William Edward Campion and Mary Ann Every).

Rosemary’s maternal grandmother was Maud Jane Kirk Wilsone (the daughter of Thomas Wilson and Jane Ann Kirk Skinner).
