Kash Patel is an American lawyer, federal prosecutor, and far-right conspiracy theorist. A Republican, he has been Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, since February 21, 2025. He has also been Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, from February 20, 2020 to May 13, 2020, Chief of Staff to the U.S. Secretary of Defense, from November 29, 2020 to January 20, 2021, and Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, from February 24, 2025 to April 10, 2025.
Kash was born as Kashyap Pramod Patel in Garden City, New York, to Anjana and Pramod Patel, a chief financial officer for a global distributor of aircraft bearings. His father was from Uganda, from a family originated from Bhadran, in the Anand district of the state of Gujarat; they were expelled by Idi Amin in 1972, and lived in Canada before being accepted to the U.S. His mother grew up in Tanzania, also with roots in Gujarat. The family is Hindu.
