Joe Ruby was an American animator, writer, television producer, and music editor. He co-created the Scooby-Doo franchise, beginning with the show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, with Ken Spears. The two also co-created the shows Dynomutt, Dog Wonder; Jabberjaw, and Fangface. They co-founded animation production company Ruby-Spears Productions.
He was the son of Mildred and Carl Ruby, a doctor. He was of Polish Jewish/Russian Jewish/Lithuanian Jewish descent. His father was born in Canada, or in Kolno, now in Poland. His mother was born in Canada, to immigrant parents. Ken served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was married to Carole, until his death, with whom he had four children.
