Andrew Scheer is a Canadian politician. He has been Leader of the Conservative Party, from May 27, 2017 to August 24, 2020, and Leader of the Opposition, from May 27, 2017 to August 24, 2020, and again, from May 6, 2025 to August 18, 2025. He has also been Assistant Deputy Chair of the Committees of the Whole, from April 5, 2006 to November 20, 2008, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons/Chair of Committees of the Whole, from November 21, 2008 to June 1, 2011, Opposition House Leader, since September 13, 2022, and, previously, from November 18, 2015 to September 13, 2016; Speaker of the House of Commons, from June 2, 2011 to December 3, 2015, and Parliamentary Leader of the Conservative Party, from May 6, 2025 to August 18, 2025; as well as, a Member of Parliament for Regina—Qu’Appelle (SK), since June 28, 2004. He was the youngest Speaker of the House in Canadian history. He is 6′4″.
Andrew is the son of Mary Gerarda Therese (Enright) and James Scheer. His father is Deacon of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa. Andrew is married to Jill Ryan, with whom he has five children. Jill’s brother is professional football player Joe Ryan.
Andrew’s father was born in the U.S., and is from a New York City family. Andrew’s paternal grandparents moved to Canada as well, and both died in Ottawa. Andrew’s paternal grandfather was Jewish, of Austrian Jewish and Romanian Jewish descent. The rest of Andrew’s ancestry is Irish, and smaller amounts of English and German. Andrew and his parents are/were Catholic.
Andrew’s paternal grandfather was Harry David Scheer (the son of Oscar Scheer and Clara Rosenberg). Harry was born in New York, U.S., to Jewish emigrant parents, a father from Czernowitz, Austria-Hungary (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine), and a mother from Romania. Oscar was the son of Alexander Scheer and Anna Siegel. Andrew’s grandfather Harry may have converted to Catholicism.

Andrew is one of several people of Jewish heritage and/or religion to have led a major federal party in Canada, on a non-interim basis. David Lewis, who led the NDP, from 1971 to 1975; Annamie Paul, who led the Green Party, from 2020 to 2021; and Avi Lewis, David’s grandson, who has led the NDP, since 2026; are the others.
