With
remap's help, I have finally found the article I was looking for! Lately people have been seeing a
trend of less diversity in mass media, and it immediately reminded me of this particular article that discusses how mainstream media is becoming more
tasteless mainstream. While the article doesn't touch upon race or stereotypes in the media, I think it provides some insight about the economic forces at play and support for the idea that corporate still thinks that mainstream America = white America.
Unless you have a subscription to The Economist or to an online database like Proquest, I'm afraid I can't directly link you to the article. So I've posted the entire article here.
( Ever-increasing choice was supposed to mean the end of the blockbuster. It has had the opposite effect.Collapse )As I was re-reading this, it occurred to me how TL;DR this entire thing is. :| I'm not sure if too many people would be interested in reading this... but if you do, major props to you. And I'd love to hear whether you think the ideas in this article suggest more/less/same diversity in the media.
