What Is a Domain Handle on Bluesky?
A domain handle on Bluesky allows you to replace the default @example.bsky.social format with a custom domain, like @example.com. This not only enhances your branding but also makes your handle memorable and professional.
One thing to keep in mind is that going through this process will free up your current handle for anyone else to register.
Steps to Set Up a Domain Handle
-
Choose a Domain
If you already own the domain you want to use for your handle, you can log in to your account and start the DNS verification. If you don't have one yet, you can search & purchase a domain through EncodeDotHost.
-
Set the Domain in Bluesky
- Open the Bluesky app or go to their web interface.
- Go to Settings > Advanced and enter your domain under the handle section.
- This will give you your unique DNS record, but don't click verify yet.
-
Update DNS Records
You'll need to add a TXT record to your domain's DNS settings. Here's how:
- Log in to your EncodeDotHost account.
- Navigate to the DNS Management section of your account.
- Select your domain and add a new TXT record with the following details:
- Name:
_atproto - Value: The value provided by Bluesky when you configure your handle in their app.
Tip: Changes to DNS settings can take up to 24 hours to propagate globally (but is usually fairly quick).
Verify on Bluesky
Heading back to the Bluesky App or Website, you will now be able to click "Verify" to update your handle
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
- Propagation Delays: If your handle doesn’t update immediately, wait for DNS propagation.
- Incorrect TXT Record: Double-check the record’s name and value for typos.
- Domain Not Found: Ensure your domain is active and properly pointed to your hosting account.
