How to enable Bash auto-completion in AlmaLinux

Bash autocompletion can significantly enhance your command-line experience by suggesting commands, filenames, and directories as you type. Instead of memorizing every command, you simply need to input a few characters and press Tab to view potential options.

Unfortunately, AlmaLinux 9 doesn't have Bash autocompletion enabled by default. To activate this helpful feature, you'll need to install the bash-completion package.

Note: The following steps require superuser privileges. If you don't have these, please contact your system administrator.

In the next section, we'll guide you through the process of installing and enabling Bash autocompletion on your AlmaLinux 9 system.

How to install

As mentioned, we need to install the bash-completion package. AlmaLinux uses the dnf package manager. To install, open a terminal and run the following command:

# dnf install bash-completion

After running this command, you will receive a confirmation of the package and version that will be installed, plus a confirmation prompt to confirm you would like to continue with the installation. Type "y" and hit enter to continue.

Once installed, you will need to log out and back in for the change to take effect.
