Benefits

Summary

The Nyma Makerspaats project is a case study in sustainable refurbishment and energy retrofit of a heritage building. A VirtuHOT HD installation provides both domestic hot water and space heating to the businesses working in the historic building.

The original building manufactured synthetic silks and had fallen into disrepair. Over the last 3 years, the Nyma Makersplaats has been refurbished for use by businesses producing items as diverse as sculptures, furniture, cargo-carrying bicycles, wooden musical instruments, ceramics, and renovated cars.

Including energy efficiency to reduce heat-related carbon emissions and ensure sustainable heat generation was part of the original brief to ensure a modern and sustainable refurbishment.

This project was designed and delivered by Naked Energy’s exclusive distribution partner for Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg, VenFeld.

685 VirtuHOT HD collectors operate in conjunction with a heat pump system, generating both hot water and space heating for the building. The Virtu installation has a capacity of 199 kW (equivalent to 678,800 BTU/hr) and covers 3,520 square feet across three long arrays on the south-facing elements of the factory roof. Additionally, space heating is provided through water-to-air fan coil units, which are well-suited to the post-industrial aesthetic of the development. The plant room includes a 4,755-gallon hot water tank.
