The young woman was almost finished with her shopping trip when another cart rudely stopped her in front of the bakery. She was about to push it out of the way, when the white cake caught her eye. It was a birthday cake. A white cake, with purple icing that read 'Happy Birthday' and candy confetti. Three colored flowers of icing were on the edge of the cake.
Birthday. Who cared about those anyway? It was just a day like any other. The parties, the presents, the cakes. All of them were stupid, and she wasn't thinking that because she'd never had a party. No one ever invited her to any parties either.
The cake was pointless, an absolute waste of money and she had no idea why she picked it up and stuck it in her cart. Her date of birth was in May, several months away and again, she never celebrated it. Jackie stared at it for a moment, then pushed the other cart out of the way so she could hurry and get out of the store. It was 2009, she shouldn't have to shop with people. Why wasn't grocery delivery available everywhere?
Holding her head up, she walked to the check out line, and dared the cashier to ask her about the cake. Luckily, the cashier was a zombie with dead eyes that barely spoke a word to her. Those were her favorite. No questions, no small talk- just serving her function in the least annoying way possible.
"Happy Birthday." she said to herself, once home. The cake went on the table, and she realized she didn't have the colorful birthday candles that she always saw on cakes. Instead, she gathered the smallest tapers she could fine, and set them on the cake.
This was so stupid. If anyone saw her they would laugh and she would have to throw the cake at them. If they heard her singing 'Happy Birthday' to herself, they would laugh. Luckily, she was alone as usual and the cake was all hers. Blowing the candles out and cutting a slice for herself were private moments that she wouldn't share with anyone.
Just a cake, that's all it was. All it would ever be.
