What is a BFM , where and how to use it?

I have currently started doing an SPI protocol verification project in UVM where I create only the testbench with no DUT as it is a Verification IP(VIP). Now I came across this topic called BFM(bus function modules). I want to understand what it is and where exactly it is used. I also want to understand how different it is from the driver. I have attached my project block diagram for reference. (Note: The config block below is actually to determine the modes of SPI)reference.
