FIRST WHIFF

In passing,
my first whiff
of barbecue smoke
of the warm season. . .

People start to come out
to celebrate
or just to enjoy
the outdoors and each other,
simple work, simple play–

drinking in all the splendor
of each extra-long day
under the rays
of the bright, high sun.
