Amujae Initiative

The flagship program of the EJS Center, the Amujae Initiative’s objective is to inspire and prepare women to unapologetically take up roles and excel in the highest echelons of public leadership, and to bring other women along.

African women remain underrepresented in leadership across the public and private sectors. There are just five women serving as Prime Ministers and two serving as Presidents across the continent. Only one out of every four members of parliament is a woman. And women remain significantly outnumbered in the top ranks of African businesses.

Publications

Country Snapshots Compilation Publication

The EJS Center’s Country Snapshots platform was created to provide accessible, reliable data on women’s political participation in all 54 African countries. By disaggregating representation across branches of government and offering comparative insights by region, it allows users to interact with up-to-date statistics in meaningful ways. This first edition consolidates data as of 2025 and serves as a baseline for tracking change ahead of the 2030 milestone for Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Zimbabwe Country Snapshot

In Zimbabwe, women occupy respectively 30% and 44% of the seats in the National Assembly and the Senate. Women also represent over 40% of the justices in Zimbabwe’s highest courts. Nonetheless, only one in four ministers is a woman. Zimbabwe is yet to have a woman president.
