Challenge
Community-Based Groups (CBGs) are one of the most promising models for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), especially leprosy. But right now, their implementation is inconsistent across countries—and mental health support is often missing entirely.
Solution
UPLIFT is a global research project developing a harmonized, scalable model for community-based care groups. It tests how integrated self-help and mental health support can lead to better physical, emotional, and social outcomes for people with NTDs.
Outcomes
- Tests the impact of adding mental health peer counsellors to support groups
- Designed with input from people affected by NTDs across three countries

Goals
A replicable, proven care model that empowers people affected by NTDs to heal, advocate, and
thrive—no matter where they live.
Why It Matters
UPLIFT will answer a vital question: How do we do community-based NTD care better?
Its findings
will shape the next generation of global NTD strategy, policy, and funding priorities.
