Mitigation
Climate mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Mitigation strategies include shifting to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and forest conservation. Climate mitigation is essential to limiting the impacts of climate change and protecting the planet for future generations.
Adaptation
Climate adaptation refers to the process of adjusting to the current or expected effects of climate change. This can involve taking actions to minimise harm, avoid harm, or take advantage of new opportunities. This can include infrastructure improvements, changes to agricultural practices, relocation of communities, and early warning systems for extreme weather events.
Resilience
Climate resilience refers to the capacity of a system, whether social, economic, or ecological, to anticipate, absorb, accommodate, or recover from the effects of a hazardous climate event, thereby maintaining its essential function, identity, and structure. These systems, interconnected as they are, therefore require a holistic approach to building climate resilience that considers their interdependencies and complexities. Any impact on one will have repercussions for the others. Adaptation and resilience can often be used interchangeably as some overlap does exist, however adaptation can undermine resilience as well as build it and as such any approach which integrates the two must ensure the ongoing potential for response diversity.
Development
Sustainable development refers to a country’s ability to grow and develop to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations. It balances social, economic, and environmental considerations, ensuring progress without depleting resources or harming the planet.
