Origins, Mission and Vision Statement

The East Central University Library dates from the founding of the institution in 1909. In an effort to make government information available to the public, Linscheid Library has participated in the Federal Depository Library Program since 1914. A new library facility, completed in 1997, continues the tradition of naming the East Central University library after Dr. Adolph Linscheid, third President of ECU from 1920 to 1949.

Mission: To collaborate with our community to prepare students for tomorrow’s world through diverse access and utilization of information.

Vision: We aspire to be a safe space for accessible collaborative engagement to promote lifelong learning.

Core Values (adopted from the American Library Association):

  • Intellectual Freedom and Privacy - We empower people to think for themselves and to make informed decisions while respecting everyone’s dignity and independence.
  • Community - We make choices that are good for the environment, make sense economically, and treat everyone equitably.
  • Access – We provide opportunities for everyone in the community to obtain library resources and services with minimal disruption.
  • Responsibility– We work to improve society and protect the rights to education, literacy, and intellectual freedom.
  • Equity - We play a crucial role in fostering equity by actively working to dismantle barriers and create spaces that are accessible, welcoming, and beneficial for all.
