In 1924, a young mother, Hattie Breckenridge, is hanged from a tree in her yard by the town mob, accused of a crime that was actually committed by her daughter. Nearly a century later, a young married couple, Helen and Nate abandon the comforts of suburbia to begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams on the same forty-four acres of rural land where Hattie once lived. When they discover that this charming property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by Hattie’s story and the tragic legend of her descendants, three generations of “Breckenridge women,” each of whom died amid suspicion, and who seem to still be seeking something elusive and dangerous in the present day.

This is the first book I have read by Jennifer McMahon. I also would not have read this book if I did not see this as an option on one of the Goodreads challenges. I mean I did not know what horror book I would like but the description just called to me. The story started off with a bang, but it just slowed after that.
The story mostly focuses on Nate and Helen, a couple who brought the land where Hattie a supposed witch who died on the land. Helen was a history teacher before they moved to Vermont, so all the history of Hattie and her family intrigued her. It intrigued her so much that she started looking for objects that was around when Hattie and any of her family died… She literally started bringing haunted objects into her new home. The story also followed a 14-year-old named Olive who was searching for Hattie’s treasure in the hopes that her mother might come back but later it turned into looking for answers into what happened to her mother.
Later the lives of the three got intertwined.
Now I already told you this book started of with a bang and then slowed down. Slowed down to much for my taste. I mean when I read horror stories with ghost in then I expect more fright where I would be scared to be alone or not want to go to bed. But this book didn’t have that scare factor that I wanted. I did enjoyed this book and I might go read more books by Jennifer because I enjoyed the writing style.
