The real meaning of Easter might have been somewhat obscured by Easter egg hunt and basket full of chocolate candy over the years.
It is not simply meant for scavenger hunts and egg decorating. Instead, it marks the day when Jesus rose from the dead, symbolizing the renewal of faith and providing hope for eternal life.
Easter is the greatest celebration in the Christian Liturgical Calendar, It is celebrated after the 40 days of Lent.
Lent marks the preparation for Jesus’ death and the celebration of the coming of the Lord. Lent is the time where we can do an inner self-check of our faith and prepare for Easter.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, followed by the completion of the Holy Week that ends on Holy Saturday.
On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion. His body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave.
The tomb was guarded and an enormous stone was put over the entrance so that no-one could steal the body.
On the following Sunday, some women visited the grave and found that the stone had been moved and that the tomb was empty.
Jesus himself was seen that day, and for days afterward by many people. His followers realized that God had raised Jesus from the dead.
This resurrection of Jesus and the whole of Holy week helps us to see how our faith should be about setting aside our doubts, and knowing that we are not broken in His eyes through His love for us and through the light of the world that is Jesus.
Jesus being risen from the dead goes to show that He conquered sin and death. He is the only Son of God, who through this amazing resurrection, brings us closer to God and our faith. Jesus died so that we could be saved from sin, and that although we do sin as humans if we see Him as that light that can bring us out of darkness, we can live in His light continually.
Jesus’ resurrection during Easter, not only renews our faith but also gives us peace, restores our souls, mends our brokenness and helps us to conquer our struggles, especially when we are overwhelmed.
