About

Our Story

A lot can happen in 45 years—especially when tequila and good instincts get involved. What started as a small Douglas motel and bar has evolved into one of the country’s most iconic LGBTQ+ resorts, and it’s still only getting better.

A Welcoming Space for all Since 1981

Back in 1981, The Dunes Resort began as the Douglas Dunes: a modest motel and bar that gave LGBTQ+ locals and travelers a place to gather, let loose, and feel a little more free. It wasn’t flashy, but it mattered—and that kind of space meant everything during an era when simply being yourself wasn’t always welcome.

The Next Chapter

In 1999, after a few margaritas, Mike Jones, Danny Esterline, and Greg Trzybinski decided to take a chance, turning a local favorite into the full-on resort destination people know today. Now spanning 22 acres with over 80 rooms and a large entertainment complex featuring multiple venues, The Dunes draws people from across the country. Here, top talent from around the country sets the tone for epic nights you won’t soon forget.

And while a lot has changed over the years, the reason people come hasn’t: to find themselves, lose themselves, and most importantly, be themselves.
