George Washington, is nothing sacred?

So I'm in the grocery store with John69 and were passing one of those insert a coin thingies...when he says to me look at the George Washington Quarter slot. Inocently I look and then ask what it is that he sees...cause I don't see anything out of the ordinary. He says it's got a gag on it. So I'm looking at this thing and all of a sudden it hits me he's right. The slot for the quarter to go in is horizontal and runs from George's mouth to the back of his head and really does look like a gag. Ok you had to use your imagination...but it was there...right there in front for all the little kiddies to see. I ask you why is this so?
