Just watched Pacific Rim for the first time.
Summary: Giant robot anime without the romance.
Also, totally wanted to yell "Form blazing sword" during the first big fight scene.

Started a book blog again over on booklikes. Most recent review: Redshirts by John Scalzi. We shall see how long this blog lasts. :)
Randomly Random Readings
In other random news, I bought a bow and am attempting archery again. I decided I needed to do something to get myself outside more and since I enjoyed archery as a kid, I'd try and pick it up again, even though I was always a terrible shot. But I had to buy a left-handed bow, even though I'm right-handed because I taught myself how to shoot incorrectly as a kid. By the time I realized I was shooting wrong, it was too ingrained for me to be able to change. Oops.
Went out shooting for the first time today and did better than I expected, for not having shot a bow in twenty years. I do wish I'd bought a slightly lighter draw weight than thirty lbs though, since my arm was getting pretty tired by the end of it. My fingers are also a bit sore from the string. It'll probably just take some time for me to build up the strength and the calluses. Still, it was kinda fun. I'm glad I was by myself though, since if there'd been anyone else there on the range, I think they'd have been puzzled by my self-taught style. ;)

Errr, why is a supposedly Italian character speaking with a British accent? Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone.

Why is it that doctors can order non-critical exams read stat (they might be super-painful but people don't usually die from a kidney stone) but think there's nothing wrong with telling us the patient can go home before a radiologist looks at an exam that, if positive, means the patient can die at any minute? Lawsuit waiting to happen, methinks. Inexplicable doctor logic is inexplicable. PS: No, we did not let the patient go home but the ordering doctor was pissed. Of course, if the exam had been positive, the doctor would have been angry that we did what she said too. No win situation, I'm afraid. Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone.

Dear fanfic authors, Inflicting a plethora of descriptive adjectives upon your unsuspecting reader does not a great fanfic make. Sometimes, less IS more. From, A reader who couldn't get much past the first paragraph Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone.

Things that make me laugh at myself:
While writing the address on a package I am mailing to Wales, I spelled it Whales.
Oops.
Can you tell I wasn't paying super-close attention?

I am in the process of buying a house. I am very excited about that.
Of course, suddenly the concept of all the responsibility I'm taking on is starting to hit me and I am terrified. Eep!
And I think I'd better hurry up with the doujinshi sale. I really don't want to move these.

Post two of my "Doujinshi that aren't Harry Potter" purge. For post one, click here. I do have some Bleach, Hikaru no Go and Shaman King het pairings, for those of you who like those. Harry Potter lots will be coming soon. It looks like I'll have to sort those by pairings, so those of you looking for specific pairings are in luck.
Shipping: I will send USPS priority mail or media mail. For my larger groups, 15 to 45 normal sized doujinshi will fit in a priority mail flat rate box for $12.10 including delivery confirmation. I'll need to calculate media mail prices but it will probably run between $3 and $8, depending on location and number of doujinshi.
I am willing to combine shipping. :)
I prefer payment via paypal although if you're using the credit card payment, I'll add a fee to cover the evil paypal fees (they've come up with fee calculators since the last time I sold dj online. Who knew?)

Various doujinshi lots from my "Not Harry Potter" collection for sale after my giant purge. I don't have the heart to throw them away without at least attempting to sell them, so here goes nothing. I'm also selling some obscure het pairings, so if you like those, take a look.
Please note that I really don't want to split these lots unless I have to. I have far too many to get rid of to split them all up into single items.
Also, it's been years since I shipped doujinshi anywhere, so I have no idea what shipping will be until I get a few lots sold. Please give me a bit of time to get that figured out.
( Yubinbasya artbook -- ON HOLD!Collapse )
( Cardcaptor Sakura -- ON HOLD!Collapse )
( Star TrekCollapse )

Sorting through my giant stacks of doujinshi I no longer want. Finding some really weird and unexpected ones. I did not remember I had a Neo/Morpheus Matrix doujinshi, for example. And why did I buy Star Trek doujinshi? None of it was Trek I'm interested in.
Heh. Anyone want to buy some of those? ;)
So far, have two boxes in the "do not want" pile (one Harry Potter, one other random series) and four in the keep. And I still have two more boxes of normal sized ones to sort through, plus two mini-boxes of small sized ones.
Somehow, I think I'm going to need to make another pass through. I want to be down to no more than six boxes between doujinshi and manga and I'm at seven. *sigh*

I just placed an order for MMPR (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) on DVD. I feel kinda silly now. Still, I will finally have a chance to see Billy again after all these years. Yay!
Who knows. I might even become tempted to rummage up my blatant Mary Sue unfinished Rainbow Ranger fanfic and work on it again. ;) It wasn't my first Mary Sue (that happened when I was obsessed with New World Zorro in middle school) but it was the first one I actually started writing, once I discovered fanfic.
Oh, the memories.

I love it when a book I am not particularly expecting to enjoy turns out to be a book I can hardly put down. What a delightful surprise. :)

One of my student loans has been paid in full! Yay! I feel accomplished. I managed to pay it off in a bit more than three years, so I have saved myself seven years of interest. Yay!
Of course, I still have loan #2 to my parents to pay off. However, they haven't been charging me interest even though they originally told me they would. Nor do I think they'll come after me for the money if something horrible happens or I lose my job the way Nelnet would.
So right now, I'm focusing on the positive. I am almost free of debt. Yay!

One of these days, I am going to make a real life post about my conflicted feelings about how the boss I didn't get along with is gone ... but in such a way, that I kind of feel bad about being so delighted that he's gone. However, it will probably take a lot of emotional effort to talk about it, since his actions caused me a lot of stress and depression and I suspect is part of the reason why I've been so utterly unable to have any sort of fun with fandom and the Internet in general since I got this job.
For now, I'll leave you a book rec (or two).
The best book I've read recently? The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. It's utterly fascinating. I do have conflicted feelings regarding how the author treated weight in this book, but overall, I think it's a great, absorbing read.
Oh, wait. I also read Bitterblue, by Kristen Cashore. It was not a book I could ever consider a fun read. However, I still think it was brilliant. It dealt with the trauma an evil, insane king like Leth could cause in a very realistic way. I'm quite sure there were a lot of people who read this and were shocked that this wasn't a story like Graceling -- a fun adventure. I wasn't expecting it to be anywhere close to being as emotionally exhausting as it was. However, after thinking about it, I don't think there is any way a book about Bitterblue could ever have been a typical happy, fun adventure story. Bitterblue is about healing, which it needed to be. That's why I liked it, and that's why I'll have a very hard time reading it again.
My only quibble with Bitterblue? In both Graceling and Fire (particularly Fire), Kasta and Fire choose to never have children out of fear over what their children could become or how their children could be used. Bitterblue's father was an evil, insane madman and I cannot imagine Bitterblue not having some of the same fears that Kasta and Fire have. I really wish she'd shown a character who had the same fears as Kasta and Fire but deliberately made the opposite decision. Given that Bitterblue is a queen and having children is typically seen as an obligation for royalty, I wish this was an issue that had been brought up.
I know this is wishful thinking, since it certainly wouldn't have fit in well with the plot of the book (nor would there have been room), however, I still can't help wishing Cashore had found a way to do so.
