Our Specialised Services

Urinary Incontinence Treatment

The inappropriate loss of urine (urinary incontinence) affects many women and can be very distressing. It may occur with coughing, sneezing or exercise, or you may have to rush to the toilet and sometimes don’t make it. Urinary incontinence affects all ages and can significantly affect a person’s quality of life.

Fortunately, most bladder problems can be significantly improved or cured. Treatment varies from strengthening the pelvic muscles, to the use of medication, to surgery in some women. Because there are a range of different bladder conditions which have different treatments, bladder investigations (urodynamics) may be required so your doctor can get you onto the right treatment programme for you.

Prolapse Management

Prolapse is a common condition affecting over 40% of women at some stage of their life. Prolapse refers to the abnormal bulging into the vagina of pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus and rectum. The most common cause is the stretching or damage of the pelvic supporting structures during childbirth, but other factors include ageing, chronic cough, heavy lifting and constipation. Common symptoms include a heavy, ‘dragging’ sensation and this may be accompanied by urinary or bowel symptoms.

Conservative management includes Pelvic Floor Exercises and managing exacerbating conditions, or possibly the use of a pessary. However, significant prolapse often requires surgical treatment. The best results are achieved by surgeons with good training and years of experience.
