Two great performances already this year: Katie Jarvis in Fish Tank and Kim Hye-Ja in Mother. I won a pass to see an advanced screening of Mother and Hye-Ja is incredible. The movie is a twisted, slow-burn murder mystery about a smothering, obsessive mother whose mentally retarded son is suspected of murder. She wants to clear his name and find the real killer and becomes increasingly desperate and hysterical. Bong Joon-Ho is a masterful director (see: the gorgeous transitions to flashback sequences, poetic opening and climactic scenes, sudden bursts of horror, ratcheting up tension to unbearable levels). There's a lovely score by Lee Byung-woo too. South Korean directors are making some of my favorite films in recent years - A Tale of Two Sisters, Oldboy, Spring Summer Fall Winter... and Spring.

The new Gorillaz album is fantastic. Rhinestone Eyes is the track of the year so far, in my opinion.

Best thing about it: Damon is collaborating with artists like Lou Reed, Mos Def, Mick Jones, Bobby Womack and De La Soul. I'll share one track I love from each of them.

The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
Mos Def - Auditorium
The Clash - Train in Vain
Bobby Womack - If You Think You're Lonely Now
De La Soul - Eye Know

Also, they have nothing to do with the album -- but Spoon's Written in Reverse has a killer chorus.
