Two great performances already this year: Katie Jarvis in Fish Tank and Kim Hye-Ja in Mother. I won a pass to see an advanced screening of Mother and Hye-Ja is incredible. The movie is a twisted, slow-burn murder mystery about a smothering, obsessive mother whose mentally retarded son is suspected of murder. She wants to clear his name and find the real killer and becomes increasingly desperate and hysterical. Bong Joon-Ho is a masterful director (see: the gorgeous transitions to flashback sequences, poetic opening and climactic scenes, sudden bursts of horror, ratcheting up tension to unbearable levels). There's a lovely score by Lee Byung-woo too. South Korean directors are making some of my favorite films in recent years - A Tale of Two Sisters, Oldboy, Spring Summer Fall Winter... and Spring.
