Voice Surgeries
Best vocal cord surgeon in Airport Road Bangalore | Dr. Anitha Kumari

Voice surgeries are specialized procedures aimed at correcting structural or functional disorders of the vocal cords and larynx to restore or enhance voice quality. Since the human voice is essential for communication, professional performance, and overall quality of life, these surgeries play a vital role.
Voice disorders may arise from benign lesions (such as nodules, polyps, cysts), neurological or functional abnormalities (like vocal cord paralysis, spasmodic dysphonia), trauma, or malignancies. When conservative treatments such as voice therapy are insufficient, surgical intervention becomes necessary.
- Commonly Done Voice Surgeries
- Microlaryngeal Surgery –Delicate removal of benign lesions using an operating microscope. Laser cutting tool maybe used by whenever required.
- Phonomicrosurgery – Precise reshaping or excision of vocal cord lesions to preserve vibratory function.
- Thyroplasty– These surgeries are done for change in voice by altering the shape of the Voice Box and repositioning of a paralyzed vocal cord to improve glottic closure.
- Injection Laryngoplasty – This process is injecting materials into the vocal cord for bulk and better closure.
- Laser Surgery –Used for precise excision of lesions while minimizing tissue damage.
- Reconstructive or Oncologic Laryngeal Surgery –For structural restoration after cancer surgery.
- My approach to Surgeries
- Comprehensive Assessment –The initial assessment will involve history detailing, physical examination along with procedures such as anterior rhinoscopy, nasal endoscopy and other investigations such as CT scans, sleep studies etc., if required.
- Clear Indications & Individualized Planning – Plan surgery based on anatomical findings, severity of symptoms, and patient goals. If the assessment is that medical management will suffice, priority will be take such protocol and avoid unnecessary surgery.
- Patient Counselling – I will explain the diagnosis, available options (medical vs surgical), expected outcomes, risks, and limitations to patient and their close relatives/bystanders. This process is to enable a joint decision making and set realistic expectations of the process, expected outcome and recovery timelines. I respect patient autonomy, but guide their decisions with medical judgment.
- Choosing Surgical Technique – I normally choose the least invasive yet effective technique, where possible, maintain physiology as much as possible by avoiding excessive resection and prioritize functional improvement.
- Multidisciplinary Approach–If needed, I involve and collaborate with Pulmonologists, Neurosurgeon, Oncosurgeons, Oculoplastic Surgeons or Plastic Surgeon when conditions are complex or involves their expertise.
- Postoperative Care & Follow-Up–I provide clear instructions on post-surgery protocols the patients should follow. Post operative recovery is monitored regularly and patient is advised any change in protocol.
