How to Get Your Hands on the Godzilla Magic Cards

Do you like monster movies? What about big monster movies? Not big as in popular, but big as in the monsters are absolutely massive? Like, “run, it’s Godzilla!” massive? Like, actually Godzilla.

You’ve probably caught on by now, but today is all about the Godzilla Magic cards! If you’ve been keeping up with MTG in the last couple years then you’ve probably seen Godzilla roaming around on some cards. Or maybe you haven’t and you just stopped by because I used the words Godzilla and Magic in the same thought.

Either way, take a seat. I’ll be taking my time today to go over everything you need to know about the Godzilla cards, including how to get ahold of them. Ready? Let’s get started!

What Are the Godzilla Magic Cards?

The Godzilla cards are special alternate art cards that were printed in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Unlike the usual alternate art cards you see, these actually replace the original card’s identity, but not the effects.

Take a look at the alternate art for Void Beckoner as an example. Instead of being named “Void Beckoner” it’s called “Spacegodzilla, Void Invader.” But you might notice that the original card’s name is still there under the new name, as well as all of its original text and abilities.

The Godzilla alternate art doesn’t affect gameplay, just gives the card a different look.

Which MTG Set Has Godzilla?

The set you’re looking to pull from for the Godzilla cards is Ikoria. There are 19 cards in total, but you can’t get them all just from cracking packs. You’ll find 15 of the 19 as a potential box topper for draft booster boxes, while three more can only be found as potential box toppers in Japanese draft booster boxes. And then there’s the one oddball that you can only get as a buy-a-box promo. It's impossible to pull from packs no matter the region.

This is a pretty odd way to divide things, but it is what it is.

What Are the Godzilla Lands?

Pretty is what the Godzilla lands are. These actually weren’t part of Ikoria but a Secret Lair release featuring one basic land of each color with the truly stunning Godzilla-themed artwork. It would take tons of purchases to collect enough to bling out your whole deck, but it sure would be pretty.

What Formats Are They Legal In?

These Godzilla cards are legal in any format that their original cards are legal in, which is anything except for Standard barring special format rules like Pauper that excludes anything at uncommon or higher rarity. Basically if the original card is legal, the promo is also okay to be played in that format.

Are the Godzilla Cards Valuable/Expensive?

A couple of the Godzilla cards are pretty valuable and pricey. You’re looking at around $60 on TCGplayer to pick up a copy of Ghidora or $30 for Mothra or Biollante. Most of the other ones come in at about $3 or more and vary based on their playability and popularity.

Is It Worth it to Buy the Godzilla Cards?

If you really love the Godzilla franchise, then the answer is probably yes to buying them.

This is a tough question and the answer is always subjective. Are you a fan of the art? Are you specifically looking to purchase the Ghidora or Mothra cards?

If you’ll enjoy having them or are planning on holding onto the expensive ones for a rainy day then do as you please and buy away! But if they don’t excite you that much and you aren’t investing in the pricey ones, don’t buy them.

A card is only worth it if you have a plan for it. Even if that plan is just to let it sit around in a hard sleeve and look pretty. That’s still a plan! But with that said, spend responsibly. Make sure you’re not burning a hole in your wallet to buy these cards, or struggle to get them all graded. This shouldn’t be a problem for most of them but it’s an easy trap to fall into for those few pricier ones.

You should have a pretty good beat on whether or not it’s time for you to buy after considering all this.

Where to Find Godzilla Cards?

Okay, so you’ve decided to find and buy godzilla cards. I can’t blame you! The Godzilla cards look fantastic and look even better in a card sleeve and on the battlefield. Thankfully TCGplayer is always here for you with Godzilla cards and makes it the best option to buy them.

You can also search Amazon for the Godzilla cards or find them on eBay. You need to search a bit when it comes to finding the singles you want unless you find someone selling a full collection.

Will These Ever Be Reprinted?

I highly doubt that the Godzilla cards will ever be reprinted. These were a pretty neat set of promos done with the visit to Ikoria when the set dropped. There was a Secret Lair later on for it with the lands, but that was still pretty close to Ikoria.

I don’t see us getting these again unless we go back to Ikoria in a future set and the base cards that got these alternate arts get reprints themselves. Maybe then, but definitely not anytime in the foreseeable future.

But I could be wrong. You never know.

Bonus: Godzilla Commander Decklist

Yes, you can do an EDH deck with Godzilla cards. You'd need a 5-color commander if you wanted to fit them all in, but for this example, I have a power matters commander, bracket 2, fun deck that is battlecruiser Magic. It might not be the most complex or intricate, but it is stompy fun in Gruul with none other than Godzilla, King of the Monsters / Zilortha, Strength Incarnate at the head.

Some standout cards in this deck are Anguirus, Armored Killer / Gemrazer for some enchantment and artifact removal, Godzilla, Primeval Champion / Titanoth Rex for instant-trample enabling, and Jumbo Cactuar, because power matters is fun.

Can You Get Godzilla on MTG Arena?

You can get the Godzilla cards on Arena, but it’s much more difficult now than it was before. It used to be that you got a certain number of promos depending on how many Ikoria packs you bought on MTGA, or you earned them by playing the Ikoria draft events on Arena's schedule. That promotion period has unfortunately ended so you can’t get any of the cards that way.

You can only get these Godzilla card styles with a code, but finding this code isn’t an easy task, if at all possible. There seems to be no way to get these codes right now. To top it all off these card styles also can’t be crafted.

But there is hope. A slim hope, but hope nonetheless.

You can get the Secret Lair Godzilla lands with a code, and those codes have been floating around online. Sadly I have yet to locate any codes being sold or given out for these lands. The codes won’t be easy to track down if there aren’t any left.

Can You Get the Godzilla Versions on Magic Online?

Yes, you can get the Godzilla cards on Magic Online, though it’s mostly from buying or trading singles. You should check out places like Cardhoarder to check their stock on the Godzilla series cards if you’re looking to get some of that digital bling!

What Was the “Death Corona” Controversy?

Ah, yes, Spacegodzilla, Death Corona. This was problematic when Ikoria released in April 2020.

Magic cards are designed and printed long before they actually hit the shelves. It just so happened that Ikoria’s release was perfectly timed with the eruption of the pandemic-that-will-not-be-named, and the alternate card name for Void Beckoner was originally “Spacegodzilla, Death Corona.”

This became problematic after it had already been printed and packaged. The original naming choice came from Spacegodzilla’s signature attack, which just so happens to be called the Corona Beam.

Wizards did do something, thankfully, and stopped printing on that name as soon as possible to prevent it from being packaged as much as they could. They replaced it with the name “Spacegodzilla, Void Invader” and started to circulate that version as soon as they could. They also made sure that digital versions reflected the change.

It was a really unfortunately-timed arrangement of events and circumstances that was out of anybody’s immediate control when it happened, but Wizards did good to remedy the issue as soon as humanly possible.

Is Godzilla Now Canon in MTG?

The question of whether of not Godzilla is now canon in Magic lore is a variable answer. You have to remember that MTG is a multiverse of infinite possibilities. There’s no finite end, so by some sort of logic there’s a plane where Godzilla exists and can be summoned across the Blind Eternities.

But as of right now I consider it in a bit of a limbo space. You can call it canon at any time because that’s what the multiverse implies, but at the same time those promotional cards were just card styles and not actual standalone cards like the Street Fighter or Walking Dead Secret Lairs. They do not count as Universes Beyond either. Although, if Godzilla cards were printed today, that'd probably be the case.

I’d consider it non-canon from a perspective of cards that are printed, but I think we can agree that it’s canon if anybody wants to consider it so for the convenience of entertainment.
