A busy off-season, but not necessarily a good one. To begin, we are now without most of our best players. Tyreek Hill. Bradley Chubb. Jaylen Waddle. Minkah Fitzpatrick. Jason Sanders. And although Tua might not be among our “best” players, depending on who you ask, he was certainly a starter and a centerpiece of our offense. In return, we got four draft picks. Last Week I asked if we were at rock bottom, but now after getting blown out by the lowly Browns, I see the answer was no. The Charger loss was not rock bottom. The Browns loss is. For now. On a day in which Tua threw 3 more interceptions and the special teams unit faltered, the Dolphins lost again because of defense. More specifically, Jaelen Phillips missed easy sacks on both first and second down during the Chargers’ last-minute desperation comeback. Phillips can be a beast out there, and I’ve certainly praised him a lot over the years, but in this case, with the game on the line, he caused the loss. Three horrendous plays cost us this loss. Huge plays. The part that gets me most angry is that we could have overcome two gigantic mistakes, but three was one too many. First, honorable mention goes to guard Jonah Savaiianea, who ruined a nice first down by being downfield illegally. That stuff happens. The Dolphins have not made any splashes in free agency. But this may be a good thing. I think, finally, that the Tyreek Hill situation might make Chris Grier get smarter when it comes to trades and free agent signings. Despite what Grier thinks, and despite what the players say publicly, and despite what the media portrays…I have a different take on things: Most free agents who sign with the Dolphins do so because they want the South Beach lifestyle and the lack of income taxes. Mike Vrabel is the Patriots head coach. Aaron Glenn coaches the Jets. Two tough head coaches just joined our division, while no-socks Yale grad Mike McDaniel remains our coach. You remember Mike McDaniel, right? The head coach who said he won’t tolerate players quitting in the middle of a game “anymore.” Meaning that it was fully tolerated during his first three years? By adding two strong head coaches to our division, I feel the Dolphins got weaker.
