The Third Key
Night makes no sound here; it only folds the edges. On the fabric remain three clear scratches, like fingers held back at the last moment. They do not say where they lead, but they mark an accord: where the light ends, the rest obeys.
When you see them, do not call them. When you hear them, do not count them. If they reach the edge of your breath, stay still. They say the night tries three keys before it opens: the third always works, but never on the lock you expected.
The sleeper does not know they are being watched. The one who looks understands only this: the third scratch does not follow the other two.
Quiet Lull
