Discs come in a wide variety of plastics. Some are better suited for certain scenarios than others, others are simply better quality and will last longer.
Every brand has their own names for the different plastic types. We’ve put this chart together as a general reference the next time you see a plastic name and want to know how it fairs!
| BASE PLASTIC | STANDARD PLASTIC | TRANSLUCENT PREMIUM PLASTIC | OPAQUE PREMIUM PLASTIC | SPECIAL EDITION |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Suregrip Plastic (SS-SSSS) Gateway have 4 different firmness’ in their Suregrip base plastic used for putters. All high quality options. Which firmness’ kind of speaks for itself, but makes more sense when you know the following: Firm (F) Super Soft (SS - aka 2S) Super Stupid Soft (SSS - aka 3S) Super Stupid Silly Soft (SSSS - aka 4S) |
Eraser This plastic looks and feels like the rubber on the end of a pencil. Hence the name “Eraser”. Nothing really similar on the market. Changes grip depending on the temperature. |
Diamond Gateway have succeeded in creating a different looking plastic than most in this class but it feels great in the hand and is as durable as any of the others. Good option for those wanting long lasting discs. |
Platinum You won’t be disappointed if you’re trying something different or like the look of the Gateway brand. Great plastic. Platinum discs are always solid in colour, are slightly less stable and have a more gummy feeling than their Diamond plastic. |
Superglow Some special element is added to make these Glow putters. Normally they feel like the SS plastic if that helps. |
|
Money Not seen very often in NZ. This blend is only known as it is marked with an “$” somewhere on the disc. Extra gummy element added making them look shiny on the surface and become really gummy with use making them great for wet and cold days. |
Special Blend (SB) Hardly ever seen in NZ but here’s what they say “We often sample materials that are sent to us by suppliers that are either entirely new components or additives to our existing blends. We started labeling special blends after several years of running them with the first being SB-6 and are now up to SB-30. These prototype batches range in quantities from 60 to 300 discs. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to recreate the runs due to their experimental nature. The current blend of SB-30 is something we can recreate and could end up becoming the final Special Blend.” |

|
Organic Organic runs are made using a combination of recycled rubber and a renewable resource (corn based bio-polymer) making an ecofriendly product. Most organic discs are neutral tones and have flecks of other colours through the plastic. Firmness ranges between S and 2S. |
||||
|
Pure White The Pure White blends are created to produce a flatter, lower profile driving putter. The PW runs are mostly on the stiffer side are are slightly more over stable so can handle a high power shot such as Putter Drives or forehand flicks |

Electron High Tech Base Line plastic blend for superb grip. Probably some of the best feeling plastic in this class. Designed to wear slowly with use Also available in “Soft” or “Firm” flexibility for putters |
Proton MVP's Most Durable Premium Line. High durability for a long consistent life Designed to withstand the roughest conditions Transparent candy colors Also available in soft flexibility for putters |
Neutron Flagship Premium plastic. It comes in the widest arrangement of bright colours. Very durable. Cosmic Neutron is the same as above but with sweet swirls through the centre. Its the most stable of all the MVP plastics. |
MVP, Axiom and Streamline produce their Special Edition range by using their existing plastics and making super cool full coloured stamps instead. This makes up their SE range of discs. |
|
Cosmic Electron The same as above but sweet swirls / bursts through the plastic. |
Eclipse Class Leading Glow The worlds most glowy of glow plastics. Super bright and long lasting action for night time play. |
Fission™ Class Leading Lightweights Uses Microbubble Technology to create an ultralight middle of the disc. The added rim then has an even higher GYRO® overmold density rate making these spin faster making them much more resistant to the wind. Generally they are available in lighter weights and fly less stable than other MVP plastics. |

|
R2 Neutron Plastic The environmentally conscious choice because it's made from recycled plastic. Almost all are Black with a white rim. It offers the same feel as Neutron and similar durability. If it's not a perfect mold then MVP won't sell the disc, instead they'll chip it into tiny pieces (recycled). |

C-Line Swedish Made Class leading durability Discmania's most durable plastic. C-Line discs retain original flight characteristics for an extended period of time. Whether used in heavily wooded situations, or on extremely rugged courses, the C-Line plastic will continue to perform predictably and avoid damage better than almost any other plastic. Good grip and showstopper see-through look. Typically the most stable blend of plastic. |
S-Line Swedish Made Excellent grip in all weather conditions with great durability. This plastic ages well, which means that your disc doesn’t change drastically in its flight behaviour after a couple of collisions with trees. Potentially the nicest feel in the hand for all options in this class. |
Forge Semi-translucent, highly durable and grippy premium plastic with metallic substance mixed in it. |
|
