about

The Ornamental Portal is a vital part of the Palace of Typographic Masonry. The author spent a month in silence in the hermitage he himself built in the palace garden, after which he reported back to the Governor at the kitchen table. This report is published as the The Redemptive Qualities Of Ornament, and in it Dirk Vis seems to aim to redeem ornament from the diminishing judgement by Adolf Loos, in his renowned Ornament and Crime from 1910, and to strengthen the somewhat naive plea in favour of its added value by Alice Twemlow, in the article The Decriminalisation of Ornament published in Eye Magazine in 2005.

The text was designed by Rietlanden Women's Office on the Ornamental Portal poster, which can be ordered from the website of the Palace of Typographic Masonry, where you can also find the full text of the essay: www.palaceoftypographicmasonry.nl/ornament/von-wersins-kitchen/the-redemptive-qualities-of-ornament-written-by-dirk-vis/
