Abstract

This study analyzed crime news coverage in Memphis 10 p.m. newscasts two years following the 2023 Tyre Nichols killing. Nichols was killed by Memphis police officers after a traffic stop resulting in criminal charges and substantial news coverage from local television stations. Results of this study indicated that despite public calls for reform, local news sustained traditional patterns of news reporting emphasizing violent crime, law enforcement voices, and heavy exposure with little increased inclusion of community voices or systemic context.
