Databases and Search Tips

Advanced Search - all the databases have an advanced search. It also can be helpful in narrowing your search right from the start.

Limiters: Limiters work and look a little different in each database but all of the databases have them and they can help you narrow your results AFTER you type in a search.

  • Date - select a date range for your results to eliminate articles that are too old, or were written during a specific time.
  • Subjects - Browse the subjects included in your results and select or exclude subjects to narrow your search.
  • Document or Source Type - This limiter can narrow your results to articles from specific types of publications. For example, you may only want articles from newspapers, or you may be looking for an overview of a topic which might be best found in an encyclopedia.
  • Content Level or Lexile - These filters can be used to find things that are easier to read. For example: a Lexile score of 925L - 1185L is the equivalent of a 5th - 8th grade reading level. If you are struggling with reading some of the articles, try limiting to articles that are around 1100 (more or less).
