The Queen of Sichuan Mountains: A Hidden Alpine Paradise in Western Sichuan

In the middle section of the Qionglai Mountains in the Hengduan Mountains system of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there lies a hidden gem favored by nature — Mount Siguniang in Sichuan. Located in Rilong Town, Xiaojin County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, it is only 220 kilometers southeast of Chengdu, making it the closest snow-capped mountain to a major city in China. With its high accessibility, it has become the first stop for countless people traveling to Western Sichuan. Known as the “Queen of Sichuan Mountains” and “Alps of the East”, this sacred mountain takes four towering snow-capped peaks as its core, connecting three major canyons: Shuangqiao Valley, Changping Valley and Haizi Valley. Integrating snow-capped mountains, glaciers, meadows, lakes and primeval forests, it boasts both the grandeur and vastness of the plateau and the elegance and grace of the south of the Yangtze River, as well as the profound heritage of thousands of years of Tibetan and Qiang Culture.

The Queen of Sichuan Mountains: A Hidden Alpine Paradise in Western Sichuan

The soul of Mount Siguniang lies in its four graceful snow-capped peaks. In Tibetan, Mount Siguniang is called “Skub La”, meaning the mountain god in charge of birthdays, and these four snow-capped peaks are the incarnations of four kind-hearted girls in local legends. Legend has it that a long time ago, there was a kind mountain god named Aba Langyi who had four beautiful daughters. The devil Mordo coveted their beauty and proposed marriage, but was rejected. Enraged, Mordo opened the Tianhe River, causing floods to rage and villages to be destroyed. To protect the local people, Aba Langyi fought a life-and-death battle with Mordo and eventually died of exhaustion. Seeing the floods raging and their father killed, the four girls resolutely used their bodies to block the floods, eventually turning into four snow-capped mountains. Their father, Aba Langyi, also turned into Balang Mountain after his death, guarding them forever. This touching legend adds a touch of tenderness and sacredness to the snow-capped mountains, making every visitor feel awe for these four peaks.

The four snow-capped peaks are arranged in order from high to low, each with a unique posture and charm. The highest peak, Yaomei Peak, stands at 6,250 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in the Qionglai Mountains and the second highest in Sichuan. Its steep and straight mountain body is covered with snow all year round, and its pure white peak pierces the sky like a cold and arrogant girl, earning it the title of “Queen of Sichuan Mountains”. So far, only a few professional mountaineers have successfully reached the summit. Sanguniang Peak, at an altitude of 5,664 meters, is majestic and precipitous, serving as a common training base for professional mountaineers. Erguniang Peak, at 5,454 meters, has a gentle slope, suitable for amateur mountaineers with certain experience. Daguniang Peak, the lowest at 5,355 meters, has a relatively gentle slope, making it an ideal entry point for novice mountaineers, attracting countless outdoor enthusiasts to realize their dreams. The four snow-capped peaks stand side by side, showing different scenery at different times. At sunrise, the sun shines on the snow-capped peaks, dyed with golden light, like a fairyland. At sunset, the glow reflects the snow-capped peaks, blending crimson and snow white, stunningly beautiful. When surrounded by clouds and mist, the snow-capped peaks appear and disappear from time to time, as if the four girls are playing in the clouds, mysterious and charming.

In addition to the four iconic snow-capped peaks, the “Three Valleys” of Mount Siguniang hide countless natural wonders, each with its own unique charm to meet the needs of different tourists. It is home to rare animals such as snow leopards, Tibetan antelopes and golden monkeys, and unique plants such as alpine rhododendrons, sea buckthorns and larches are scattered all over the mountains. In 2006, it was listed as a World Heritage Site as part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, highlighting its important ecological value. At the same time, it is also a settlement of the Jiarong Tibetans, where Tibetan and Qiang Culture has been passed down from generation to generation. On the 4th day of the 5th lunar month every year, the local Tibetan people dress in beautiful costumes to hold a Sang煨 ceremony and throw Longda to pray for blessings from the mountain god. The enthusiastic Guozhuang dance party at night allows tourists to immerse themselves in the simplicity and enthusiasm of the Tibetan and Qiang peoples.

As a comprehensive scenic area integrating sightseeing, mountaineering, adventure and leisure tourism, Mount Siguniang boasts the wonder of “seeing four seasons in one day and being accessible all year round”. In spring, alpine rhododendrons bloom one after another, meadows turn green, full of vitality. In summer, the average daily temperature is only 15-22℃, making it a natural summer resort with cool breeze in the forest and full of negative ions. In autumn, the forests are dyed in layers of golden and red, with snow-capped mountains and colorful forests complementing each other, making it a golden season for photography. In winter, it is covered in silver, with ice waterfalls and icicles everywhere. Shuangqiao Valley becomes a holy land for ice climbing, and there is also an International Ice Climbing Festival on New Year’s Day, quiet and romantic.
