Inspiration

After seeing the themes of campus and innovation, we also realized that for many people at York, meeting and connecting with people can seem like a daunting task. Adding onto that, it also might be difficult for students to find additional practice, past examinations and the textbook for certain courses. This inspired us greatly to develop a web application to solve the problems of students that face that exact challenge.

What it does

YorkU Campus Connect allows users to upload files such as study notes, slides, textbooks and assignments for other fellow York students to download. This allows students to have an easier way of finding practice questions and past assignments/exams to study off of. Along with that, YorkU Campus Connect includes a filtering system in which users can select specific courses to better suit their needs.

How we built it

We built this website by using Next.js front-web framework and tailwind CSS to design the website. The note is uploaded and stored in AWS S3 cloud. We made it all public for this hackathon.

Challenges we ran into

It took more than half the time to find the idea, planning the project, setup and fix problem. We then spent time finding the proper design for the website and implemented the function to make everything work. At the last hour, everything works perfectly.

What we learned

This hackathon is a good place for students to practice skills they've learnt so far. In addition, we learnt to use new technologies (AWS S3, typescript, next.js) and this is amazing.

What's next for YorkU Campus Connect

In the near future, we plan to add a portfolio/profile feature that allows users to display their courses, year, program, skills and experiences. Additionally, we plan to implement a system to allow users to network and meet other students within their program or year by matching one another using their profile as well as a messaging section to help them connect faster. Lastly, we plan to improve the user interface experience and update the graphical design of the site.
