Inspiration

"SustainX" focuses on the concept of Carbon Tax and Carbon Credit in the context of Canadian climate policy. Carbon Tax is defined as a price on fossil fuel emissions, a major contributor to greenhouse gases impacting climate change. It aims to reduce the cost of climate change to the Canadian economy. Carbon Credit involves a system where sustainable projects can generate credits, which can be traded to meet carbon dioxide compliance obligations, encouraging businesses to invest in sustainability.

What it does

The project addresses the challenges faced in communication between businesses and the Canadian government regarding carbon activity. SustainX proposes a solution in the form of a dashboard for all carbon dioxide related activity for a company, provided by the government. This dashboard aims to ease communication, break down carbon activity, and provide a user-friendly, constantly updated interface. It also encourages investment in sustainable projects, displays the cost of carbon activity, and compares businesses by giving a carbon score to create a social incentive for reducing carbon footprints.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was finding the data online to back up our project. The scarcity of readily available information on carbon tax and carbon credit systems highlighted a critical gap in data collection and dissemination. This gap not only hindered our ability to develop a fully informed solution but also indicated a broader issue in the field of climate policy and corporate sustainability. The lack of centralized and accessible data on these crucial environmental metrics underscores the need for improved data aggregation and sharing practices. This challenge has further motivated our team to emphasize the importance of reliable data in driving effective climate action and policy-making.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're particularly proud of our intuitive UI which demystifies complex carbon data and presents it in an engaging and digestible format. We managed to create a seamless experience that encourages regular use and sustainability engagement.

What we learned

Throughout the development of SustainX, we learned the importance of user-centric design in the context of environmental technology. We also gained insights into the complexities of carbon accounting and the critical role of data in driving sustainable practices. Collaboration across diverse skill sets within our team was key to overcoming the technical and design challenges we faced.

What's next for SustainX

Moving forward, we aim to integrate AI-powered recommendations and a helper system titled "Magician" (working name) to provide businesses with personalized strategies for reducing their carbon footprint. We are also exploring partnerships with sustainability consultants and eco-friendly suppliers to expand our platform's offerings. SustainX is on a path to not just report on sustainability but to actively facilitate a greener future for all businesses.
