sustainaBite
Project Overview sustainaBite is a simple, yet powerful tool designed to help reduce food waste while making home cooking easier for students and busy individuals. Our project aims to solve a common problem—too much food goes to waste because people don’t know how to use the ingredients they already have. With 2.5 billion tons of food wasted yearly, this not only wastes valuable resources like water, energy, and labor but also contributes to climate change.
How It Works Despite our limited experience with hackathons, for our first hackathon together, we built a program that acts as a smart recipe finder. Users can enter leftover ingredients, and the program searches a database to find the best recipe match. Key features include:
- Ingredient-Based Search – Users input what they have, and the program suggests recipes that make the best use of those ingredients.
- Recipe Saving – Users can save their favorite recipes for easy access later.
- Simple One-Pot Cooking – Every suggested recipe requires only one pot, making cleanup easier and cooking more accessible for those with limited time, small kitchens, or mobility challenges.
Why It Matters Healthier Eating for Students – Eating out often leads to excessive sodium intake, increasing health risks. The average Canadian consumes 3,400 mg of sodium daily—more than twice the recommended amount. Cooking at home encourages a healthier, more balanced diet, which has been linked to better focus, memory, and academic performance.
Less Waste, More Sustainability – By making use of leftover ingredients, we help individuals cut down on food waste while also making meal planning more efficient. sustainaBite is our first hackathon project, and we’re excited about its potential to make cooking smarter, more sustainable, and accessible for everyone. Thank you for your time—we hope our project can make a positive impact!
